Anyone know the cheapest way to get back-and-forth to BWI-IAD and BWI-DCA via ground transportation? Price and time info would be great! Thanks in advance!

DCA to BWI

Metro and metro bus would be my option... go to wmata.com. You can scroll down to the ride guide and put in your origin and destination and get an answer.

Take the yellow line into town and switch to the green line in the same direction (at Lenfant plaza)..... go to the end of the line. Ask the station agent where to pick up the bus to BWI.... I think it's the B20, but I'm not sure... it's like 2 bucks and it's a comfortable commuter type bus with luggage racks and soft seats. It takes you right to the terminal at BWI. I think you might be able to get a transfer for the rail to bus segment to make it cheaper. I never pay attention to how much metrorails costs, but it can't be more than about $4 for the rail segment.

IAD? where's that?

If time is an issue, consider a one-way car rental.

Happened to me when my ride fell through. Rented a car for $19.00 from Alamo or Hertz and drove to IAD.

Check out BWI Airport's Website for info on ground transportation to & from BWI. The B30 bus from Greenbelt to BWI will cost you $3 and runs every 40 minutes, while the metro fare is $2.35/$3.85 off-peak/peak from DCA to Greenbelt (from wmata.com). You can also take the Metro to Union Station in DC and then the MARC train to the BWI Airport rail station; there's a shuttle bus from there to the terminals. That's about a dollar or two more expensive since the train fare is $6 from Union Station to BWI (though you pay less on the Metro to Union Station). The train has better frequency at rush hour but is less frequent off-peak than the bus, and it doesn't directly serve the terminals.

BWI to IAD would be a pain via public transit. WMATA runs an hourly bus to IAD, route 5A, the schedule is here. You'd have to get from BWI to DC via the train or express bus and Metro, then pick up the 5A bus at l'Enfant Plaza or Rosslyn. Allow AT LEAST three hours' travel time for that.

Oe take MARC from BWI to Union Station; Union Station Red Line to Metro Center; Transfer to Orange Line; Orange Line to West Falls Church; Take Washington Flyer from WFC to Dulles.

On the rental car, Thrifty or Alamo will do it for $25 and it will take you only an hour.

IAD is washington dulles international airport in reston virginia to the west of washington dc i think it is along route 66

I haven't taken the bus from Greenbelt, but the MARC train has got to be better. It's not as posh as Amtrak, but it's comfortable, fast, cheap, and not crowded except in the evening rush hour.
