Can you be fired ... for blogging?

Anybody and everybody has a blog on the internet these days. For some people, blogs have become "gripe sites" where people complain about coworkers, bosses and even company policies. The question facing human resource managers: can these blogs be grounds for dismissal?
Denver labor law attorney Kimberlie K. Ryan says it depends. "These blogs often embody the tension between a worker's free speech and privacy rights on one hand, and an employer's rights to protect confidential information and good will, on the other," says Ryan.

So much for your first amendment rights.

AA subpoenaed the computer records of The Mechanic forum to see who posted what. I often wonder if they are provided with information on the posters here.
 
I doubt it. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not aware of AMR ever having had someone specifically tasked to monitor or participate on any internet forum.

The way AA pisses money away the person monitoring this board is doing it from a high rise in Manhattan overlooking Central Park West. B)

Good point.

As long as you're not doing anything illegal or contrary to AA Regs, you really have nothing to worry about, regardless if it's Corp Security, Corp Comm, or HR looking over your shoulder.
 
There's a huge difference in monitoring the web and going to the web to investigate a complaint. If a valid complaint is made, the company is obligated to research it.

So then, how do Morgan, Lewis and Bockius fit into this?

I know Dennis has the unfortunate distinction of being specifically named in the NMB's order investigating the NWA AMFA/IAM election, and for having been subpoenaed to investigate a alleged work slowdown at UAL, but unless it had to do with maintaining lab conditions during one of the several AMFA card drives, or a harrasment complaing, when and what exactly were the grounds for demanding the records?

Better yet, can you post a link to the subpoena, so we can all read the grounds for convincing a judge to sign the order?

I have a copy, but do not know how to post it as a link. I can snail mail a copy to you if that would help.

Would you accept my truthfulness in copying the exact words here? The doc is only 3 pages. I am not the only one who has a copy, so others could attest to my accuracy once it is posted.

This was seperate from NWA NMB election and was posted on the-mechanic.com until he shut it down. AA wanted to know the identities of the posters and also the identities of all AMFA card signers. Bottom line, they got neither, but they did try. Now they did just get the identity of the F/A with the training video and also an HR rep did mention to a fellow worker that they did copy the-mechanic.com postings nightly.

Found part of it...Of course as always they used the so-called job action excuse to get the subpeona.

I don't have time to look for it right now, but the May 20, 2000 court filing includes the demands of a copy of every AMFA card signed by AAers. :shock:

Big Brother needs to know who signed. :down:
