For those who may have wondered about the history of the two carriers moored at the PNSY on final for 27R at PHL

USS John F. Kennedy

USS Forrestal - tremendous history for this ship that carried aircraft from the early carrier-based jets to the F-14 with plenty of F-4s in between!

Cool stuff, thanks for posting. I learn something new everyday. For the life of me I thought Forrestal was a WWII vintage. Turns out that is was commissioned the year I was born and her first Captain has the same last name and initials as I do!

Drove past those two many times on the way to and from PHL, what a sight to behold those magnificent ships. If you get a chance, tour the Midway in SAN harbor it's a good tour. Also the monument to Taffy-3 is there History of Taffy-3

This topic was brought up a while ago: I had forgotten which ships, although I see them often enough. Have yet to get a good look at the SS United States , moored closer to downtown.

I've also forgotten the details about the abandoned airfield you can see on final approach to PHL. Hope someone can refresh my addled brain.

I'm reasonably certain the facility you speak of was called:

Philadelphia Navy Yard Field / Henry C. Mustin Naval Air Facility,

Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, PA

40.1 North / 75.27 West (Northeast of Philadelphia International Airport, PA)

Much Much More Here

As is my beloved Yorktown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Yorktown_%28CG-48%29 who is moored alongside her sister ship Ticonderoga: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Ticonderoga_%28CG-47%29

Did not know there was a cruiser by that name, which makes me think carrier.

What a nice diversion from the other threads. Mods please keep this one on a tight leash!! Pretty Please?

I believe the Navy N3N biplane (similar to a Stearman, sorta) was built in Philadelphia at that facility.

There is a picture of an assembly line with Bi Planes being built. Not sure what type.

I didn't know that the Tico's were out of service. Damn, I'm getting old.

And This has to do with USAirways How?

It's about as relevant as your comments are!

Since most who visit PHL either fly over or drive past the area and since PHL is US Airways International and more profitable hub I think it is totally appropriate.
