So this program is ending next week. I wonder if my tax dollars were really spent wisely on this program. Spending money to destroy cars does not seem to make sense. If someone can explain how this was a good idea please do.

You want an explanation ? Here’s one for ya ….

Every month the government (and other intuitions’ ) releases economic reports that help to give a gauge on how the US economy is doing …..

The effects of the The cash for clunkers program will show up in all manner of reports next month , manufacturing , retail etc , Where as if there had been no government program the reports might be highly negative , with cash for clunkers they may now show positive growth . Please keep in mind however that the growth is not real , government stimulus is not real economic growth . I guess if your looking to forestall a September sell off of stocks then this program could be considered to be a “good “ thing …

Hangover coming???????????? Doesn't look like it is going to be the success they said it was. Glad my (childrens') tax dollars were used so wisely.

Yup after a few more months car loans will start defaulting as more people are losing their jobs...do i smell a another bailout?

Looks like the foreign automakers are the biggest benefactors of this socialist experiment.

So is it better to buy a PT cruiser made in Mexico or a Mercedes built in Georgia?

Destruction of viable assets to finance new ones does not improve an economy.

I am not convinced that letting yet another production asset go belly up would have been a good idea. If the auto industry can remake it's self and start producing viable assets then IMO it will have been worth it.

Also, for all you hawks out there. Keep in mind who produced the war materials during WWII. Should the US find the need to defend it's self from a real enemy, having manufacturing plants in the US held by US companies might be a real asset.

Aside from that. The US produces very little. Getting rid of a huge portion of what little we do produce does not seem wise.

That's all fine and dandy. All I am asking is do you think it is wise to get rid of even more of what little manufacturing we have in this country. I do not think it is a good idea.

That's my point. Someone has to build stuff and someone has to run it. typically, it's the blue collar workers job. Getting rid of it or letting it die is not in the best interest of the country in the long run IMO. Whether it works or not and whether it should have been handled differntly is a different thread.

In the next year or two , look for repossessions to rise ! People who were driving clunkers (with NO payments), now own a car with payments ! Kinda reminds me of when government got involved with the "Everyone deserves a house, whether they can afford it or not " program ! Think we all know how that work out for everyone !

Nothing but more GOVERNMENT meddling !

There's legislation awaiting funding for a refrigerator program samo samo as CFC.

This is cool......

I've been kicking around a 22 cf side by side......maybe with a sale and cash for cold ones....I'll get my 'fridge....Praise Obama................

Got a new GE last new years. Freezer bottom 25 CF. Got it as a scratch and dent. Can hardly see the blemish.

Personally...a total waste of money.

First, why is this for cars? Why not food, movies, etc. Why is it only the UAW gets this hand out? Well, I have a theory, but I'll hold that to myself for now.

Second, the money isn't being paid out and they are practically bankrupting some dealers who have paid the money out but haven't gotten it from the taxpayers through our confiscatory middleman Barry and his (and every other President's henchmen...the IRS.)

But third, why for "environmentally friendlier" cars?

I live in Michigan. We have one of the highest gas taxes that we have to pay and then add sales tax on top of that so our beloved Grandholm is double dipping us.

These "green" people want more fuel effecient cars to reduce emissions...its so good for our environment they say. But then, when we slow our gas purchases, they whine about not getting the tax revenues from the gas/sales tax.

And then, are you going to turn your 16 year old lose with your brand new car? I didn't think so. So how are you going to get him/her a car they can destroy for 3-4K when they are all destroyed under CFC rules?

The whole thing made no sense to me at all...other then it being a pandering maneuver to their UAW voters.

But like a poster on another forum I frequent says as a "disclaimer" to his posts "But I could be wrong."
