For those saying younger people don't have CC cards or ATM cards....PLEASE, they couldn't buy a ticket without a credit or debit card. NOBODY should have to carry $300-$1000 on their layovers and THAT is reason enough to go cashless. The only people who will REALLY miss the cash alternative are the thieves.

As far as the HHD? If our stupid flight attendant group would just once read their company mail, a memo, or visit Wings, they would KNOW how to troubleshoot with the HHD. There is NO EXCUSE for the STUPID scenerios I have seen. How about checking the batteries to see if they are low. Soft setting. Transmit. Wow, what concepts. If everyone would transmit and not let the darn thing accumulate a week's worth of sales, there wouldn't be many issues.

I promise you between Brinks and stealing, we will profit A LOT the moment we go cashless!

Do you seriously believe that each of those youngsters on flights bought their own ticket? Kids traveling between divorced parents homes are plentiful in our society - one of the parents buys their ticket and off they go. Some even fly enough to earn status, but that doesn't mean that they have a credit/debit card. US would be smart to come up with a policy before some unfortunate incident appears in the media.

And I suppose it would be too difficult to ask whoever buys a ticket "would you like to pre pay for your childs (or any passenger for that matter) on board meal?
Just a thought....

Cashless is the way to go period. To many people with their hands in the pot.

For those that are flying ( some children excluded) how did they buy their ticket? Cash at the ticket counter? My goodness people. Now we shouldn't go cashless because of kids? Hey I know, lets go back to complaining about trash bags. Passengers buy tickets with a credit card and will use credit cards to purchase items onboard. Period. 🙄

I love being able to use my credit card for BOB. It beats waiting for my company to reimburse me. I also applaud the new US beverage selection (mmmm, Starbucks Frappacinno)....More choices are also better than less.

Bill Me Later?

I personally would prefer to use a credit card, and I never travel without at least 2 personal credit cards and my corporate credit card -- but the fact remains that not everyone has a credit card, or even a debit card. If they do have a debit card, they might not carry it with them when they travel. Don't forget that some people have a tendency to go into "stupid mode" when they travel.......and forget to take their debit card with them. (I admit that I have forgotten my debit card on occasion, because I do not keep it in my daily wallet.)

I'm just opposed on principle to airlines (any airline) not accepting cash for food. If they want to enforce credit card readers only for pillows, blankets, premium beverages, internet, and whatever other a-la-carte items they should choose to sell, that's fine by me, but cash should always be accepted for food items.

I wonder how well this will go over. I've used a credit card to purchase items on board, and in three instances, never had the transaction post to my account (YAY! Two free drinks and a free can of Pringles!) Until the company can get these pathetic little machines to actually transmit CC data, they will lose out. And no one has pointed out what exactly happens if HHDs aren't present OR (imagine this) working properly. What of it, Travelpro?

Well if the HHD doesn't work drinks are on us but not announced. That's what I would do. As for people not traveling with a credit card or debit card? Well I'd dare venture to say that those people are a very tiny percentage. Again these people that don't travel with credit cards/debit cards....how in HELL did they buy their ticket? C'mon now people. It's the way to go, it's the right thing to do and will simplify the onboard sales. Is WN or AA having this kind of backlash? Really? Seriously? It's going cashless. YIPPPEEEEEEE  Well I guess that will BLOW for some on a LAS overnight right? 😉

Oh yeah and as for what to do when the reliable 🙄 HHD doesn't work..........what does WN or AA do? Maybe they just cancel the flight due to outrage.

I agree with that...probably 99% of that small percentage is UM's.

Is WN or AA having this kind of backlash?

According to jimntx, AA's policy is that onboard food is included in the fee charged for UM's so no worry about a credit/debit card. Don't know about WN, but I don't think they serve BOB - if there's no food to buy then credit/debit/cash isn't a problem.

WN will not accept an unaccompanied minor as a passenger unless the origin and destination airports can be reached by a non-stop flight or a through flight with no change of planes at any point; so, it's not so much an issue for them.

Wouldn't that make things worse since the child can't get something to eat in the layover airport where they all accept cash?

Okay, before the HHD's we only excepted Cash. So, these machines, NEVER transmit, ever! Is the Company ever going to recoup the money lost??? Especially if it is a fraud, or bad card?? Hello, the machines don't track or recieve the info, until on the ground! Think of all the crap, and banks to go thru and get the money back.
We always deposited money, not into a BRINKS, but Station personel, on every layover, and signed off. That is it!! Put safes in every station, and be done with it! Monies always deposted no matter location.

??? There is no layover airport. They do not accept UMs if their routing would require them to change planes at any point. Period. On WN, the UM must be able to fly from origin to destination (parent to parent)nonstop-- such as HOU-PHX, or on a through flight with no change of planes--such as, DAL-TUL-STL same flight number.

Unless the policy has changed again, US has pretty much the same policy - UM's on non-stop flights only. Unlike WN, however, US does have meals - BOB - for sale on the longer flights.
