Six Reported Dead in Plane Crash Off Miami

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - A propeller-driven seaplane carrying at least 19 people crashed Monday off Miami Beach, and at least six people were killed, authorities said. Scuba divers and rescuers in boats struggled to reach the victims.

The Chalk's Ocean Airways plane went down shortly before 3 p.m. within sight of Miami Beach's high-rises.

"We're still trying to get people out of the water," said Javier Otero, Miami Beach Fire Department support services chief.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Chris O'Neil said at least six bodies were recovered.

At least six dead in South Beach plane crash

At least six people died Monday afternoon when a seaplane crashed just outside Government Cut near South Beach, sending jet skiers, surfers and rescue workers scrambling to pull passengers from the ocean.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that at least six people died in the crash. Spokesman Lt. Commander Chris O'Neil said he had unconfirmed reports that up to 16 people were aboard the plane.

The plane was operated by Chalk's Ocean Airways, a South Florida airline the flies to Bimini and Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

According to the airline's website, its fleet is ``undergoing an extensive refurbishment program which includes complete mechanical overhaul and cosmetic renovation, in addition to all new interior appointments.''

Dozens of people scoured the waters and a half-mile debris field of plane parts and fuel just outside Government Cut and south Miami Beach. At least a dozen rescue vehicles were on the scene, including air-rescue helicopters and a hazardous-materials team.

This is probably the end of Chalks. They only had 2 working Mallards, with 2 in the hangar under repair. I am thinking the one affected was 830PA (actually flown in that one a few times)...

Chalks was always an easy flight for me to the Bahamas.. if there was ever a problem, you'd just land in the water!

N2969 is reported as the one that went down. These guys are aware of the fatigue associated with salt-water operations. I would guess they are constantly on the lookout for possible structural failure. It is all very sad. :(

The seaplane that crashed off Miami Beach last month, killing all 20 people aboard, had fatigue cracks in both wings, a preliminary federal report said Monday.

The right wing of the Chalk's Ocean Airways plane separated from the fuselage shortly before the Dec. 19 crash, and investigators had earlier found cracks on the right wing's support beam. But the new report by the National Transportation Safety Board on Monday revealed that the left wing had fatigue cracks as well.

The 58-year-old, G-73 Turbine Mallard plummeted into the ocean minutes after taking off for the Bahamas.
