One of Oklahoma's most important assets is the aviation industry, Victor Bird, Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission director, told members of the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce at a meeting Wednesday, and he encouraged chamber members to support growth at the Sallisaw Municipal Airport.

Bird pointed out that general and corporate aviation are growing. "It's about getting from point A to point B in the fastest way possible.

"Convenient access to airports is one of the main reasons businesses locate where they do," Bird said, adding, "One of my favorite quotes is 'Business does not come calling on a bus. It comes in a corporate aircraft.'"

Bird urged chamber members to contact their legislators and seek federal and state grants to improve the Sallisaw Municipal Airport, which will attract business and industry.

Bird said the competition will be intense for federal grant dollars for airport improvements in the future, and he asked for the chamber members' help. "We're going to have a real fight over federal grant money for airports," Bird said. "Sen. Jim Inhofe is aviation friendly. He is a pilot himself. Call him."
