Nearly a year after taking sole ownership, the city of Washington appears to be getting serious about improving Warren Field Airport (KOCW).

Included in the council’s consent agenda for its meeting Monday is a proposal to submit several improvement projects to the N.C. Department of Transportation so it may consider adding them to the department’s Transportation Improvement Program. Submissions to the TIP are used by DOT’s Division of Aviation to allocate state aid and federal grant funds for airport improvements.

“We’re anticipating that as general aviation continues to grow ... we can become a base for corporate aircraft,†City Manager James C. Smith said.

That’s why the proposed improvements call for building two additional corporate hangars.

The city views the airport as a valuable tool for increasing the city’s tax base and helping attract new businesses and industries, the city manager said.

“We think the opportunities to use the airport as an economic-development tool is good,†Smith added.

He said the city and Beaufort County Economic Development Commission should work together to promote the airport.
