Charlotte/Douglas International Airport posted strong growth again in April, handing 10 percent more passengers than a year earlier.

About 1.42 million passengers boarded a plane in Charlotte in April, a number that includes passengers who switched planes here en route to somewhere else. A year earlier it was 1.28 million.

For the first four months of the year, Charlotte/Douglas handled 12 percent more passengers compared with the same period in 2006. Through April, 5.26 million people boarded a plane in Charlotte, compared with 4.67 million a year earlier.

The number of aircraft movements -- takeoffs and landings -- was up 4 percent in April.

US Airways, which has its largest hub in Charlotte based on daily flights, has increased capacity in Charlotte, as have other airlines.

Charlotte/Douglas was recently the nation's fastest-growing major airport, according to an Observer analysis. Officials attributed that to US Airways lowering some fares, and rising fares at regional airports such as Greensboro's, driving fliers to Charlotte.
