Delta Looking at US Airways

DL coming into the "play" either as a serious suitor or pot stirrer determined to muddy up an AMR/US merger makes me wonder just how much of their actions are aimed in a personal way at Parker & Kirby?

The way DL rose up and rebuffed US/Parker makes me wonder what went on in those meetings? Sounds to me like a possible genuine distrust/dislike at the top between the two companies. It does happen. It happened with US and PIT. The deal to keep PIT a hub was within 10 minutes of being done and supposedly Dr. Bronner made some half assed comment and pissed off Onerato(?) and the deal blew up. Personalities do make a difference and sometimes it seems that when it comes to US Airways, Delta sees red and it's not on their planes.

Gee, SparrowHawk, are you suggesting that airline executives would let their egos drive their business decisions?

This would be a good merge. I've only flown with both airlines once...but, hey with the economy the way it is, this merge just might be for the best, hopefully more jobs can come from this if it does happen.

Not sure if you are kidding or not. However, I think you will find as a consumer less choice, and as an employee fewer jobs.

Market Likes US Airways-Delta Chatter

“An AMR with the right cost structure would be an attractive merger partner but we have serious doubts that regulators would allow either of the two large U.S. legacy carriers (Delta and UAL-Buy) to acquire AMR,” wrote Maxim analyst Ray Neidl. “We also believe that regulators would have a problem with a Delta acquisition of LCC due to the extensive overlap in their systems. On the other hand we believe that a US Airways acquisition of AMR could get regulatory approval and the combined airline would have enough market mass to be competitive with Delta and UAL.”

Anytime you take the marginal player out of the equation, its good for the market and industry. DP has been trying to make something of LCC for quite some time but has failed to do so. When, not IF DP throws a number out to the creditors, or waits until the BK exit of AA we'll see how interested the AMR board or the creditors are to combine the airlines. Any way you slice it, LCC is sailing towards the horizon to be right sized onto a larger airline, or to wither on the vine.......

If you go back, through my post, you will find one where I told you a long time ago a AA/US merger is more about getting rid of US than US taking over AA. Overcapacity .... it needs to go to have a healthy industry. Once it's gone you will start seeing a living wage for those that survive. And I think Doug will be in charge when it happens.

AA wants the CLT and PHL hubs and will utilize the DCA stuff. That's all she needs to compete in the east against DL and UA. The AA/CLT hub coming on the heals of the WN/ Airtran merger in ATL is a "bad dream" for Delta. That's why she is sticking her nose in it.

I can see CLT, but why take on PHL to pretty much duplicate what they already have? Just fly bigger planes from JFK. Besides, a hub is nothing but gate leases. The DCA stuff - more Express than mainline and no additional slots over what US has after the slot swap leaves some people out on the street.

PHL has awesome O&D. Very good, large, focus city.

UA/CO adding transcons to PHL too. WN setting up shop in ATL to funnel traffic from the NE to point south.... LCC has the highest consolidated CASM in the industry, no real JBV antitrust agreements... Yup, Dougie better do something.

AGREED. There is absolutely NO GOOD to Come out of a US/DL hook-up and "if" there is any Justice at the Justice Department (another Government FlopHouse) a proposed merger should be TOSSED OUT before the ink even dries with a "What the F!". US and UAL was never a good fit and certainly US/DL proves the point even moreso. Bad for consumers, cities served and employees.

Another "it's the biggest east coast O&D hub US has so it must be awesome" believer. Did you know that PHL has less O&D than PHX? Than NYC to the north? Than Wash to the south?
