Delta Air Lines Inc. has assured creditors that it won't rule out the possibility of merging with another airline after exiting from bankruptcy if it defeats a hostile takeover offer from US Airways Group Inc., according to people familiar with the situation.

To build support for its plan to remain independent, Delta appears close to agreeing with its official creditors committee on several provisions designed to clear a path toward an eventual tie-up. Oh, gee. Thanks.

Sorry for not being able to give the entire article. However, notice where it said Delta appears close to agreeing with its "OFFICIAL" creditors committee on several provisions designed to clear a path toward an eventual tie-up AFTER it exits bankruptcy. Doogie needs this hostile takeover to happen while DAL is still in bankruptcy. If the official creditors are going to agree to this, it would appear the deal with LCC is on thin ice.

Looks like Feb. 1st may be the deadline after all.

That was earlier Monday. Unfortunately for LCC, this is the stand of the ad hoc debtors, aka "Unofficial" creditors, not the "Official" creditors committee, who have the final word on whether or not to allow Parker's Feb.1 deadline to pass. If the WSJ article is true, the "Official" committee is going to go along with DAL's plan to remain independent with assurances that after DAL exits bankruptcy it won't use a "poison-type" pill to potentially stop another merger.

I'm not naive enough to think DAL won't eventually merge with another carrier at some point, but it would appear at this point that management/labor's vehemenent opposition to a hostile takeover attempt by LCC was just enough to stop this one from coming to fruition.
