'Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama, his Democratic rival, both left the campaign trail Wednesday and returned to Washington to vote on the historic $700 billion bailout. Both voted for the bill.

Obama used the opportunity before his colleagues and TV cameras to lay out his rationale and explain his economic vision.
Obama urged any lawmakers on the fence to "step up to the plate."

The best thing about this whole Detroit thing (Population decrease) is that a TON of the DTW folks are heading back down south from whence they came, ............to Georgia/Atlanta !!


And finally, ....if you want to know the origin of why folks FLED the south, to originate the Great Northern migration ask yourself, what prompted a people, who NEVER saw....Ice/snow/cold in thier lives to go North (to cities like DTW/ORD) ?

This kind of corporate welfare for powerful business interests is exactly the sort of wasteful crony capitalism that played a major role in Detroit's decline in the first place! If you’ve dug yourself into a deep hole, you’re unlikely to get out by digging even deeper.
 
People don't get it. Our GDP continues to fall or gain little, because manufacturing jobs are leaving. At one time cities formed a symbiotic relationship with manufacturers, because their taxes would offset the non-profit properties. Now most cities are left with too many non-profit properties that although they try not to raise taxes, they must. And they must find other forms off income flow. Add to that the Federal aid that isn't what it use to be, and the State aid that isn't what it use to be, well you better find a source of income to create jobs and rebuild the infrastructure. Buffalo went BK a few years back and the State took over all operations.

I'm willing to bet that most people who work in Detroit, don't live in Detroit. That is yet another hit to the money situation. Detroit should be a wake up call, because the city isn't shutting down for business and someone has to bail them out. Don't think you're immune.
 
The key point in your statement is that they were reliant on external aid...

Manufacturing jobs are leaving Michigan, but not necessarily leaving the US.

They're going to the business friendly Reb States, who are also winning back some work previously thought lost forever to China and Mexico....
