As was noted in another posting, MSY station employees will have burn vacation time if they want to be paid for days not worked while the station is closed. Another posting notes that MSY employees are being offered TDY (temp duty) in other stations (don't know if the company will pay for their hotels.)

In the past, the company has allowed station employees to donate vacation days to another employee unable to work due to extraordinary circumstances (i.e. child with a serious disease.)

While there is an MSY employee relief fund, some employees whose own budgets are stretched by paycuts and rising gas prices may not be able to give as much as they would like. Donating one or more vacation days might be a "pain free" way to help out.

(Of course, the company would need to approve such a plan.)

I personally dont believe that the company should stall anything. any kind of help that those poor folks have gone thru they need now! If I had not been furloughed, I would have been glad to give some of my days to them.

I dont think US Airways wants to donate anything. other airlines have sent planes full of water, snacks, supplies, baby food, etc.... not to mention all the free tickets that they are donating to get people from MSY and the area to family in other areas of the country.
If we could donate a vacation day or two I would be up for it. :afro:

Not true... according to an article posted on justplanenews...

"US Airways has also established an employee relief fund for victims of Katrina, and has donated 5 million Dividend Miles to help the American Red Cross with relief efforts."

Granted it's not $$ or water or goods, it will help get relief people there.

I'm not a US employee (thus not voting in this poll), but I am in favor of such a proposition. In the our department at the university where I teach, we operate like a close family. We've had a few situations where one of us has had unplanned surgery (my case in '92) or an accident (another colleague about 4 years ago) and others have picked up the slack so we could still collect our paycheck with no complaining. Faculty have no sick or vacation days, as opposed to our staff, who are governed by state employee rules. It was an act of kindness and love... no one questioned what would be done.

I sincerely hope someone in CCY sees this and implements it somehow. I'm sure if a small number of you donate even one vacation day, it will make a huge difference to these people and their families.

Thats a good thing that US Airways is at least donating dividend miles... I think that its a start.

I would think that they would join other carriers in at least sending say an A-321 or a 757 to help get those stranded out. bring the plane in with supplies and take refugees out. Airtran is sending 2 planes and Delta has sent 2 so far and FEDEX NWA and AA have sent some in.

It's slightly off the subject, but since I don't personally know any of the MSY folks maybe someone else does and can let them know.....

The wife & I rattle around this house with 3 empty bedrooms since the kids grew up and left the nest. It's not near the Gulf, but if any of the MSY folks and/or their families want a place to stay in the GSO area, someone PM me.

Jim

I had the same thought Jim.....Temporary pet adoption was another idea.

Anything to try and taken some of the burden off the people that are trying to rebuild their lives.

As for those concerned about trying to run relief flights to MSY....you have to have special permission from FEMA to operate any type of relief flight. The airport is not open to just anyone that wants to drop in with supplies. We tried to operate a relief flight today but I understand that it was turned back to CLT because the federal agencies on the ground at the airport could not handle the number of flights.

According to a friend at UAL, MSY station employees of the Elk Grove Township-based company (as someone likes to call it 🙂 ) are being placed on paid leave while their station is closed.
Anyone know what the policies are of other airlines at MSY?

Just to let you all know, US is flying relief flights out of MSY. They are taking them over to Lackland AFB in SAT, so that folks can be bussed up to IAH. We sent a plane out of CLT yesterday loaded with pallets of water and supples. I know this because I am on the volunteer list for the flights. We are using 737-300's for the flights.

Yesterday A/C 385 operated Two Round Trips from MSY. Today A/C 385 is also scheduled to Fly Two Round Trips From MSY to Marietta Ga. so to say U is not doing anything, is an understatement.

I talked to our station mgr and will start a donation food fund and send it their way.
Just think if YOUR HOME WAS SUDDENLY GONE!?
yes, I would give a weeks vacation time to them!
