Amtrak’s ridership and revenue has been steadily increasing over the last 10 years, and 2011 set a new ridership record with 30.2 million passengers, and $1.9 billion in ticket revenue. But, even though it took in $1.42 billion from Congress last year, it still manages to lose $1 billion annually. This is hardly a new development. Amtrak has a long and storied history of functioning at a loss despite government subsidies.
So, as we enter what appears to be a new era (maybe?) of government austerity, it seems worth asking if Amtrak can ever turn a profit without government help. We rounded up some people who pay attention to this issue and asked for their ideas to fix Amtrak, if it can be fixed at all.

They haven't issued their 2012 annual report yet.

If Bear's numbers on revenue and ridership are correct:

1) ridership was up 1M over 2011, about a 3% increase
2) revenue was down

FY2011 expenses were $3.9B, which was up 6% from FY2010, so it probably was at least $4B.

The key metrics: revenue isn't keeping up with expenses, especially if revenue really dropped by

Operating at a larger deficit sure is a success story to be proud of, Bears... 😉

Oh, and the earlier claim that ridership being "off the charts" doesn't hold water. It's higher than the past couple years, but a 2-4% increase year over year isn't all that exciting to me.

As a point of comparison, Metro North, Long Island Railroad, and Metra in Chicago EACH carry >80M passengers per year.

The problem with that right is when the union workers make the decision for all the non-union workers. Their voice is not heard.
Wonder how the people who were "FORCED" to join a union, just to aquire a job feel ?

Liberty can only be achieved when government is denied the aggressive use of force. If one seeks liberty, a precise type of government is needed. To achieve it, more than lip service is required.
Two choices are available.

1. A government designed to protect liberty—a natural right—as its sole objective. The people are expected to care for themselves and reject the use of any force for interfering with another person’s liberty. Government is given a strictly limited authority to enforce contracts, property ownership, settle disputes, and defend against foreign aggression.

2. A government that pretends to protect liberty but is granted power to arbitrarily use force over the people and foreign nations. Though the grant of power many times is meant to be small and limited, it inevitably metastasizes into an omnipotent political cancer. This is the problem for which the world has suffered throughout the ages. Though meant to be limited it nevertheless is a 100% sacrifice of a principle that would-be-tyrants find irresistible. It is used vigorously—though incrementally and insidiously. Granting power to government officials always proves the adage that: “power corrupts.”

This the choice we face as we move toward any of several fiscal cliffs awaiting us.

Collapse of our Currency is possible
An economic collapse that will make the Great Depression look like a camping trip
multiple years of an economy that drifts in and out of recession to tepid growth

The Congress will play kick the can down the road until their is no longer any loot to be divvied up between them and the crony capitalists.

Like you said......welcome to the Libertarian side.

I thought everything was coming up roses and lollipops....

The Wall Street Journal reported:

An audit released Friday that shows the Federal Housing Administration faces projected losses of $16.3 billion at the end of September prompted housing officials to announce a series of measures designed to avoid an injection of taxpayer funds.
“Even under generous accounting rules that no other financial entity gets to use, it is insolvent,” wrote Ed Pinto, a housing expert at the American Enterprise Institute, today in an email. Pinto regularly sends out an email titled FHA WATCH.

Update dell,

Fiscal year ending 9/30/12;

31.2 M. riders
$ 2.02 " B " (taken in)

: )

Boy this sounds like a Dodo that should have been put out of its misery along time ago.

President Obama would double down on spending on Amtrak, despite it being a chronic money-loser. That kind of irresponsible spending cannot continue, nor can we justify asking taxpayers to keep subsidizing Amtrak, especially when its service makes up less than one-half of one percent of interstate passenger travel.

I don't think that accuracy is one of eolsens strong suits. He has a tendency to post random stuff and then lie through his teeth when he gets busted.
