Far Frozen North

I was considering looking for a job in nunavut or the NWT. i have an uncle with lots of contacts up there and he says most jobs pay real good. i figure it would be neat to go somwhere other than alberta. Any thoughts or disadvatages? (besides the cold and long periods of light\dark)

I haven't been up north for a long time but I have to say this - the experience you would gain from flying up there (both flight experience and cultural) will stay with you forever. I don't think you'd regret it. Although... at -45 with a windchill and nothing to do you might temporarily regret it.. 😀

I say go for it, perhaps some of the people that are "in the know" can help ya. Been too long for me 🙁

half child, i spent a year in YFS back when i was in my very early 20's... it was the one of the greatest adventures i ever had... the scenery and culture you can be exposed to up there is phenomenal...

i got to spend lots of time in okie's 206 and buffalo airways' gazelle as a pax... i'll never forget the sight from the left front seat of a 206 as the river broke ice in the spring... very humbling to see mother nature send those huge blocks of ice into the air!!!

as far as the people go, leave your city culture behind... where i lived, if it didn't get done today, there was always next week... if you're there in the winter, learn to curl... YFS lived for curling in the winter... if you go, enjoy!!

I know it isn't the same for everyone, but the North got into my blood in a way that I cannot describe. Though I haven't been up there for nearly 10 years, the Arctic remains my favourite place on the planet, and is the source of my fondest flying memories.

If you're used to the higher cost of living in places such as Northern Alberta, you should be okay further into the outer reaches of the realm. Seems to be a lack of cows up there to give you things such as milk, butter and love!!...do ya blame 'em?...cold hands on warm t*ts??...MOOOOOOO......be prepared to pay a little more for items such as above...

After spending countless hours in all the northern hot spots, Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk, Rae Point, Res Bay, Swimming Point etc, I agree with CTD that it can get into your blood. Its a great part of the planet even at -60 plus wind chill and the dark of a polar night 🙂

Just make sure that you get a job that pays well as the costs of everything can get to be pretty fieces compared to "outside" (south of 60) and be sure to take a camera.

You really must do a tour in the Arctic to truly be a Canadian pilot.

I have a souvenir I picked up in POV sitting right here in the house.

If I had not flown in the Arctic I wouldnt have met her.

Now back to my sinful bad days....( Before marriage. )

twinstar...you must have been ridin with Al I in that green thing in FT Smith....was up there in 79....in a jetbox....one of many tours thru Alberta...as far as working up North...get the bug out of your blood when you are young cause when you are older ...the line... been there...done that....gets repetious.....Las Vegas looks better every day....see you all in the sunny south. 😉 😀

indeed i was, dgp.. was low level over the river in GOCA... he was showing me what being close to Vne in a gazelle was like...

was another fellow from buffalo up there... had 2 beautiful white dogs that some @)#(## with a gun decided he didn't need... :angry:

the north was cool but did have some less than desireable folk.. :down:

awesome, thanks for the input i'll see if i can muster up a job for myself up there. hopefully i can make some money to put twards my commercial fw and fling wing. sounds like an interesting life experience.
