Why does UA charge considerably less for a round trip ticket to certain destinations than it does for a one-way ticket for the exact same outbound flight?

Because it can?

These days, it seems that selling a better seat, checked bags and food is where all the profit comes from, and someone who needs to go one way will usually pay the premium because they don't have much of a choice.

Often times, those one way fares end up being part of a multi-leg ticket, which is usually a business traveler stopping in multiple cities on a given trip.
