Carrier to pay $1.1 million for poor wheelchair access
December 05, 2003

(Reuters) — The government found on Friday that United Airlines violated federal disability laws that caused significant delays for certain passengers and fined the carrier $1.1 million.
Under a settlement with the Transportation Department over wheelchair access at United's hub airports, the bankrupt carrier was ordered to pay the government $100,000. The remaining $1 million represents money United has already spent or plans to spend to improve wheelchair and other services for disabled passengers.

United must hire supervisors to oversee wheelchair service at its hubs in Chicago, Denver, Washington Dulles and San Francisco and buy communications equipment for those employees.
The settlement, which involved complaints to the government and the airline since April 2000 over treatment of disabled passengers, must be approved by the federal judge overseeing United's bankruptcy case.

The Transportation Department has fined 11 carriers this year for similar violations of federal disability laws.
