Flt 1752 almost collides with RJ

Took long enough for the media to get a hold of this

I've attached the recording of Local West working 9R and at the end you'll hear Local East just after he canceled AWI3973s TO clearance and have him exit at Tango. I've also attached the taxi route assigned and the one used. That US Air guy was way out of his element since LW never said a single word about "cross". I'm sure he was overworked and fatigued. Sounds very tired.

Sadly, this is one of the FAA's biggest hot buttons because they happen practically every day to every airline with pilots of all levels of experience in all aircraft types.

Since I'm former Mesa...I figure I'll keep my mouth shut on this one and just say "Whammy...Double Whammy..."

This is also typical of your garden variety runway incursions.

TO the US crews defense:

The US crew was of the mindset that they requested to cross 9L.

The PHL controller never said "HOLD SHORT" of the runway (9L). He instead gave a string of taxi route clearances to them. Their mindset took over and they crossed.

Many factors involved but this is one thing that stands out in my mind.

EAST? WEST? Gimme a break. This could happen to anyone.

Yeah,

Didn't Mesa have one of those recently at LAX? One was a Mesa plane, and the other United.

I agree that this could happen to anyone. But he did repeat the November Sierra instructions and was also told that he was being sequenced. However we don't yet, and may never know, what was heard on the plane's radio as demonstrated by the CVR. What one location's tape records may be different from what the other location's tape records.

I would guess the only reason this came up as an East-West issue is because it has been inferred elsewhere that West pilots lack the experience of East and that makes East better then West. This thread simply points out a runway incursion that occurred by an East pilot at the largest East hub.

In defence of the US Airways crew. They specificaly asked ATC to clarify if they were clear to cross 9L.

The controller never answers their question but instead admonishes them with "I gave you taxi instructions"

The question is: Why in the 21st century are we still talking on the radio to relay ATC instructions?

The worst aviation accident in history [Tenarife] was caused by this same sort of thing.

Because radio is easier to use than TV?
