A recent survey of some 500 former TWA flight attendants shows just how badly they have fared since losing their jobs. The survey, compiled online by former flight attendants, indicates that 46% of the group has not found full-time employment. About 47% have had their income reduced by 50% or more, while 49% have had to tap their retirement savings.

Additionally, 36% said they have had to move or downsize, and 42% have been diagnosed with a medical condition since being furloughed. Today, 48% of the group is 55 or older.

This was a small sampling of our workforce. As with any new career start the income levels are rarely what they were when you were at top pay seniority. Many have gone back into teaching, nursing, or in my case social services. Those starting salaries are far better than starting at the bottom of a new carrier but are still not comparable to our maxed out f/a pay. The age of our group also played into finding new careers. A good % were in their 50s at the time of furlough. Since John Ward (vindictively) gave away furlough pay, the most senior, and hardest to reemploy had to tap into savings, 401Ks, and other available funds to support their family needs while looking for new work. The most senior group also did not get the extended 9-11 unemployment. We missed it by 1 day. Do you think there was a reason the furlough started on July 2, 2003? The most difficult to replace has been medical insurance. Age, pre-existing conditions, and availability has been a huge problem. My premiums were quoted at a low of $4000 a month to $4500 a month, both with a $2500 deductible. I have only orthopedic pre-existings (worker's comp) and my son's injury related medical bills are covered. Yes folks, that was $4000. Many have had to move or down size because of two incomes affected by the layoffs. I think that anyone not working at this point is not working due to choice. It may not be what you want or even like but there are jobs available. Many are working 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet. No tears, just a fact of life.

<_< --- 9/11 was indeed a tragedy! But let's recognize that exTWA employees were set up for failure long before than! So let's not use this for an excuse for our present circumstance!!! I hope that even at this late date something can be done for these girls!---- They don't deserve this!!!!----

Did you read that twaokc? $4,000-$4,500 a month premiums for someone who is approximately your age and you have the gall to complain about the $220 a month (with much much lower deductibles) that you send to AA for coverage for you AND your wife.

This isn't about the twaokc posts. This was a post based on the TWA f/a survey. Everyone's situation is different. The $220 x's 3(per month) that I had to pay for Cobra nearly wiped out my savings. But, it is what it is....

Its a shame, unfortunately in our winner take all culture decency and fairness take a back seat to profits.

Maybe they need to consider age discrimination as a basis of their lawsuit against the company. Since its a known fact that AA has company unions ultimately its the company thats responsible for what happened to these workers.

<_< ---Bob, unfortunately in the real world, that would be hard to prove! The only real leverage exTWA employees has, is in some of the Missouri Law makers still in Congress that are pissed at aa, and how the integration was, was not, handled! Or, in time, they may see some sort of relief from law suites still on going.---- 😉

Again! A FEDERALLY APPOINTED ARBITRATOR BY THE NAME OF KASHER ALREADY RULED ON THE INTEGRATION WITH RESPECT TO THE IAM/TWU.

ATTENTION ALL AA EMPLOYEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WE NEED TO GET OUR OWN LAWSUIT GOING REGARDING THE INTEGRATION. AT THE 25% STATIONS, AAERS WERE DISPLACED BY TWAERS. THERE ARE MANY AAERS ON THE STREET WHILE TWAERS ARE EMPLOYEED

Stay focused...this thread was about the flight attendants, Not one former TWA f/a is still flying for AA.

Sure there are -- there are still a few who were smart enough to bail out a few year earlier.

Semantics....None from the acquistion. Most of those who "bailed" were 1, Strike crossovers 2. Terminated 3. VERY low seniority

Assets are acquired and then merged. If any active employee does not consider themselves an asset, then the next round of negotiations are going to be very interesting.

I know 2 in Miami both were strikers and senior. Retired TWA started again here at AA.

Really?

If so, Excellent. AA scum deserve no less.

<_< ------ Hopeless! Just curious! Are you and aafsc related? You seem two of a kind!---- More than a little paranoid about anything exTWA!!! ----
