Often I read articles about the TWU fleet employee's, and pretty much all TWU union work groups, where in the end, readers respond with hostility and disgust over the greedy union employee's. They are appalled that they complain about corporate greed, yet they feel, union employee's engage in union greed. They feel that we are out of touch with corporate America and what's going on in the real world. Working for American Airlines, or any Airlines is like no other comparable job in my opinion. We work in a 24 hr a day 365 day a year job. We work on holidays, we work in the weather, we work under demanding time restraints, we work under duress, we punish our bodies and put ourselves in dangerous work environments on a daily basis. We are trained on hazardous and dangerous chemicals, and have no window for mistakes because if we do, they could result in hundreds of lives lost. We are responsible for way more than a comparable job if you could find one that is equal, and I never even mentioned our extensive security background checks.
So Fleet's contract provides for a 9% structural raise over the life of the contract (4 years). In 2003 all union work groups gave up money and went backwards by a substantial amount, fleet went backwards in pay by over $ 3.00. We are now in 2011 and the company has proposed to it's employee's a 9% raise that will take 4 more years to get to the top pay. That brings us to 2015 and if we assume that negotiations then, will go as swiftly as they are now, you could add at least 3 more years onto 2015 bringing it to 2018. From 2003 to 2018 is 15 years, and that 9% is what the employee's will be receiving period! That brakes down to a 0.6% annual raise over 15 years.
I'm hard pressed to believe that corporate America gives a 0.6% annual raise to any salaried employee with any kind of accountability. That number is so low they wouldn't even consider bringing it up. It's so minuscule and insulting to " talent " that those proffered would walk away and move on. Yet the greedy, out of touch union employee's are not entitled to at least demand a typical inflation and cost of living raise! I don't know how anyone could even entertain voting yes on the T/A just on the cash alone. I find it insulting to the employee's who saved the company when they were "BLEEDING". Look past the money which is insulting enough!!!!! Not 3 letters, Just 2 ... NO.
Your union brothers before you fought for you, you should fight for those to come!!!!
The members spoke loud and clear to all the president's when they went around the system and listened to the employee's needs, "We do not want a concessionary contract, and we do not want a contract with job loss!".
Stand up for yourself, you are worth more than this garbage T/A!!!!!!!
