There are, according to Paul Freemans extensive efforts, 1,849 mostly or entirely abandoned airports and airfields in the United States, and, according to Ronald V (who was inspired by Freemans efforts in the US) 1,071 airports and airfields of similar abandoned status in Europe.

I started as a flight attendant with American Airlines in 1991 and in my first few years we flew in and out of Stapleton. It was an old airport but the location was great. Now, with the new airport seemingly closer to Kansas than Denver, our layovers are in the middle of nowhere.
