We have become accustomed for instance to the idea that we are still living in the period known as the 'Ice Age'. At least four times in the last million years, since the start of the Pleistocene, the world has gone through long periods of freezing so intense that up to 30 percent of its land surface has been covered in ice, drastically lowering sea levels and reducing much of the remaining land to cold, dry deserts. But these have been punctuated by warmer, interglacial periods, lasting up to 20,000 years before the ice returns. It is in one of these 'interglacial warmings', that which began around 18,000 years ago, that we are living today. [2]

The London Telegraph wrote Sunday that a leaked IPCC report "has led some scientists to claim that the world is heading for a period of cooling that will not end until the middle of this century."
And why not? As the Telegraph has noted, "There has been a 60% increase in the amount of ocean covered with ice compared to this time last year, the equivalent of almost a million square miles."
Yes, that's right. The dire predictions of an iceless Arctic made in 2007 were wrong, just as the fearful projections of an increase in global-warming-caused disastrous storms have also been off the mark in a missed-by-the-width-of-the-universe sort of way.
Whether Earth cools or not is a question that won't be answered until a few more years or decades pass.
But this we do know: Earth has not warmed in at least 16 years, maybe more. Data from Britain's Met Office, that nation's arbiter of all things climate, shows global temperatures have been flat since the late 1990s.
If Earth indeed cools in the coming decades, how will the IPCC react?

To argue that 7 billion people and all that we bring has no affect on our environment is just silly. The average global temps are warming not cooling. Right now due to the pacific El Nina/Nino the temps have flattened for a bit.

I find it difficult to understand why people are against having cleaner air. Regardless of the affect it has on the warming of the planet, why would anyone not want cleaner air, water and earth to live with?
