I have been informed that Southwest Airlines will not field a team of AMTs for the AMT Society's Maintenance Skills Competition being held during the Aviation Industry Expo at the Dallas Convention Center this March 18-20th. Rather Southwest will field a team for the PAMA Olympics being held in Wichita Kansas later this year to defend their first place title they earned last March 2007 in Orlando. I know that Southwest has great AMTs and I wish them the best in their defence.
With the Maintenance Skills Competition being held in Dallas, which is Southwest's backyard, I had hoped they would have fielded a team for the MSC. What with American Airlines and American Eagle living next door and both of these airlines entering the MSC it would have been a terrific example of the pride AMTs take in representing not only their craft but also company. However, fielding two teams, one for the Dallas MSC and one for the Kansas Olympics, proved too much of an expense and it was decided that Southwest was better off defending their title. I am confident that this will happen and hold out hope that perhaps in March 2009, in Las Vegas where the next MSC will be held during the 2009 Aviation Industry Expo Southwest will enter and help set the example of what being a skilled, professional AMT is all about.
