Almost 80% LF. Yes I know LF doesn't mean profits but I bet they will be making money sooner than later if not already. Anyone know breakeven LF? The Pacific market is doing great. Can't wait to see what these additional 7 new destinations will be like for UAL later this year. Should generate additional FA recalls and without doubt lots of pilot recalls. Good news on the front.

United Airlines Reports April Traffic Results
Wednesday May 5, 4:41 pm ET

CHICAGO, May 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United Airlines (OTC Bulletin Board: UALAQ - News) today reported its traffic results for April 2004. United reported its highest-ever April passenger load factor of 79.9%, up 8.5 points over April 2003. Total scheduled revenue passenger miles (RPMs) increased in April 2004 by 25.8% on a capacity increase of 12.4% available seat miles (ASMs) vs. the same period in 2003.

Adding to Fly's post above, you can read the entire press release here.

The most eye-catching numbers in the press release (IMHO, of course) were the increases in United's Atlantic and Pacific load factors during April 2004. The Atlantic load factor grew by 8.8 percentage points to 84.4% and the Pacific load factor jumped by a whopping 29.9 percentage points to 80.8% compared to April 2003. Even the system load factor increased by 8.5 percentage points to 79.9%, a monthly record for April.

Going forward, if United's traffic results remain strong, this could be a prelude to the carrier seeing system load factors in the 85-90% range during the peak summer months. And if United's yields continue to show their recent year-over-year improvement trends in coming months, combined with continued (though probably smaller) year-over-year reductions in unit costs, United just might be (finally) on the edge of sustained profitability. There are some big "ifs" in the previous two sentences, but we'll see if United has really turned a corner soon enough.
