I am working on getting my private right now and rent a Cessna 150. I am just thinking about possible long distance trips I could take in the future after getting my license. I have a handheld GPS unit, garmin etrex, that I use for things like hunting. My question is whether or not its okay to use this unit ( for a supplemental naviagation) while flying the 150? I don't see why it wouldn't be, but just thought I would make sure.

Not sure. Is it FAA approved?

Even if it isn't, are you able to pull up airport information there?

I recommend saving up some green for maybe a Bendix/King AV80R handheld, or AnyWhereMap ATC handheld. Those access FAA databases and are automatically updated. They also have other features like a moving map, as well as add-on capability like SIDs/STARs (approach plates), and NexRad Weather Radar. A GPS used for land missions may not be your best pick for the cockpit (even if you're flying something that can be chased on foot...just kidding, I love Cessna 150/152s).

Well, that's two of us working on private licenses. Blue Skies and Tailwinds!

LOL, and that makes two of us! I'm doing Professional Aeronautics at ERAU Worldwide, and I'm in ground school at night! I'm not going on anything bigger than a Cessna 152 anytime soon!

Blue Skies and Tailwinds, bro!
