Its doubtful that we would be out long enough to qualify but if thats what it takes so be it.
The last strike at AA lasted 24 minutes(APA), the one before that 5 days (APFA) and if anything AA has a larger market share and the load factors are higher. On average over AAs last 60 years a strike lasts less than 9 days.
2002, A cooling-off period between Midwest Express and the AFA expired on Aug. 30, 2002, but the parties did not engage in self-help before reaching a settlement on September 20, 2002.
So, no votes do not automatically mean a strike, even being released doesnt mean a strike but we have more leverage once we are released to get a better deal. So even if the company resorted to self help they could only impose what's in the TA which is their Last Best offer(there were no counter offers from the union), so you would get the increases but we would not be stuck with this for five years.
Voting NO gives us options, hope, voting yes signs away and slams the door shut on 5 more years under industry leading concessions.

Bob, people have to inform their coworkers of this. I know the stewards SHOULD be doing that, but most stewards just push their own agenda. People need to reassure their coworkers that a NO vote doesn't mean you go on strike the day after the votes are counted.

Not only that, they CANT go on strike the day after the Votes are counted, they would still have to be released by the NMB.
While I think we should prepare for a strike, and not wait until the 30 day clock starts to do so I really dont see the government allowing us to shut down AA for any length of time. Why? Because of the amount of people and goods we move every day. Not only are our planes full but so are every body elses. The disruption would be unprecidented in this industry.
I was shocked that Capital did not "make an example" out of the Spirit pilots, like they did with the AMFA mechanics at NWA. It would not be much to liquidate such a small carrier in order to send a chill through the rest of the workforce. Look how often we see mechanics citing NWA as a reason to agree to further submissions.
Maybe they figure that a showdown with labor doesnt make sense, they got what they want if they push for more it could spin out of control.
The thing is will the NMB do as they are instructed by their charter and base all their decisions on helping commerce?(ie the airlines) Probably, thats why the workers have to make the Summer of 2000 and 2007 look like the Golden Age of travel by air when compared to the Summer of 2010. If there are no disruptions the NMB will have little incentive to make a move.
