The UPS deal with the International Brotherhood of the Teamsters includes increases in wages and benefits of $9 per hour per worker over the life of the new 5-year contract to take effect on August 1, 2008, union officials said.

That compared to comparable increases of $8.75 per hour per worker in the current six-year contract with the Teamsters, said Ken Hall, chief negotiator for the Teamsters with UPS.

Now compare that with two the past two weeks spent hiding in a bunker with nary a peep on "Non traditional compensation" or anything else for that matter from the TWU.

While the raises sound spectacular, they average only $1.61/hr per year over the 11 years. Granted, whole helluva lot better than the AA TWU members have received, but as a percentage increase, not so amazing.

ups... fed ex...dhl.....compare that to us/ua/aa/co/dl/nw/wn,etc...the airline industry has to consolidate to get that kind of raises. maybe just 4 airliners total. LOL!

I thought it said 5 years not eleven
And considering that puts UPS AMTs at close to 50 per hour
Percentage wise they are almost twice what AMR is paying its AMTs
Sounds amazing enough to me
We will be lucky to see a tenth of what they are making with the shared sacrafice at AA
All the more reason to a tenth of what they do
😀

Reading is fundamental. It's a new five year contract beginning in August of next year; the previous contract was a six year contract running thru August of next year. Five plus six equals eleven. $8.75/hr of raises in the former contract and $9.00/hr of raises in the new five year contract. $17.75/hr of raises over that eleven years equals $1.61/hr per year over that 11 years.

And considering that puts UPS AMTs at close to 50 per hour

Close to $50/hr in August, 2012, not now.

UPS hiring? If I were you, I'd send my application right away.

Why should any AMT leave AA? Our responsibilities are the same regardless of the uniform we wear. Give up 21 years to start at the bottom? No thanks. I'd rather dig my heels in deep and fight for our craft here.

And AMR paid thier AMTs what over eleven years.

17.5 percent decrease with a 3 percent raise over the last 3 years of the contract.
My bet for the next 5 years will be the same as the last 5
That should be a grand total of 0 dollars an hour raise over the eleven years
pull together win together another empty promise at the exspence of the employee

I'm here till they close the doors dont feel like starting over. I just want to make sure AMR gets every penny of what they pay me for. 😀

Compared to being up $7 an hour in pay and down $10 in benefits and workrules over the past 17 years, that's pretty good.

The funny or rather sad part of this is that the twu was having a photo event and claiming the usual slogans--"we saved jobs, etc." when a UPS engine was being worked on by AA AMT's. I pointed it than that it is not a victory for labor when you lower your labor cost so much that competitors give you work and turn around and pay their mechanics $20 more an hour.

Good luck in your fight. As I see it, nothing is going to change with AA and the craft for a very, very long time.

You should also point out the fact that one of the reasons UPS can pay their mechanics more is because they chose wages over jobs. TWU chose jobs over wages by holding firm to the outsourcing caps. Had portions of overhaul been allowed to go off-property, AA might be in a better position to improve pay for those who remained.

Forgive me for reading all of the words in the article, but the $9/hour says wages and benefits.

If that's really $1.61/hour for total compensation, it's still better than AA, but not exactly keeping up with national COLA.

MCDP,

Thanks for the good luck. I have learned to never say never. If you look at the difference in awareness of AA AMTs between 1986 to today I believe the majority of AMTs are waking up and realizing the problems with the twu int. Anything is possible when people are willing to fight for what is right. I believe my craft is worth fighting for and I am not alone.

Considering they have superior medical pension and matching 401 most would overlook the COLA figure

We have a Teamsters pension plan which is great and a 3% matching 401K from the company. So we have two plans, coming from 17 years with USairways it is awesome. My family (Wife 1 kid) pay $ 9.00 per week for health and dental. We have Kaiser here in CA and it is great. $ 5.oo visits and $ 5.00 presc

Well, you never know. I guess that it was easier for me to not come back to AA and walk into the brewing union fight. I had enough of that when I took the layoff in 2005. I guess that I am one of the lucky ones to find a new career that pays as well that is more secure. Even so, I still miss the job.
