I feel that this is an important issue. I'd like to know how we all feel about this one, which is why I'm not venturing an opinion to steer the discussion, nor am I linking to a site that may be considered biased. However, feel free to do both as this is a discussion forum. For reference, I have posted a link to the actual text of the proposed legislation.

Here's a good explanation of what SOPA means.

Proponents of the legislation are dropping like flies. GoDaddy is experiencing a massive backlash with people switching to other domain hosts by the thousands.

Facebook and google have also mentioned a day of blackout to bring notice to the dire consequences of having government be the gatekeeper to the Internet.

There are those that want the Chinese style firewall and control in the USA. If this legislation passes then we will have just that.

7 days, thanks for posting your link.

It sums up the pertinent issues in plainer english than the bill itself. I do have very strong opinions on this, but for the sake of discussion, I'll hold back for now, hence my linking something that might have been clear as mud.

Feel free to fire away! This is too important to hold back any further discussion!

Where do I SIGN UP to support legislation that BANS the " NEVER have done ANYTHING of Merit, Do NOT do ANYTHING of Merit/Will NEVER EVER do anything of Merit".....POS...Kardashian sisters ???????

Hell, you'll end up banning yourself......

I support the ban on excessive capitalization and punctuation in blog posts. 😛

It is that, yes. It appears as though the White House and several members of the Senate and House of Representatives have spoken out to denounce this bill.

Reading carefully over this thing, it is impossible to imagine how such an item could even be considered remotely constitutional. Lamar Smith should lose his seat and face prosecution for endorsing this.

We have (at least) 4 issues here.

1. Gooberment regulation/intervention (not a historically good idea).
2. Pirates selling intellectual property without paying a fee.
3. Copyright companies that extract fees from businesses to pay for copyrights.
(Did you know that if a business plays music from a Radio station/or Internet Station that you have to pay a fee?) Lookup BMI and ASCAP. Yes the ‘BIG SQUEEZE’ is here, even elevator music… 🙄
4. Hackers just screwing everybody/anybody for fun or profit.

IMHO, the Gooberment should concentrate on Hackers as they are the ones that cause more damage through hacking SS#’s, personal security, credit card info, etc…

But There is no ROI for the Gooberment, if they fail, we will have to pay in fees or higher taxes.

Today: Justice Dept. website shut down in apparent hack

The public websites of Universal Music and the Motion Picture Association of America were also shuttered. On Twitter, the loosely-organized hacking group Anonymous claimed responsibility for the hacks.

Internet relay chats supported by the Anonymous collective show participants discussing the DOJ site being down and talking about other U.S. government sites to target, including the Recording Industry of America.

You're spot on! We have law enforcement, we have laws. Instead of chasing drug dealers why not move using existing laws against those who hack for fun and profit? Part of the reason is the current regime gets a lot of support from those who benefit from passage of SOPA. I DO NOT for one minute buy the Spender in Chiefs opposition to the proposed legislation. He's a fraud, phoney and politically expedient. He'd have to look op the definitions of words like Character, Integrity, Principle.

SOPA and PIPA postponed indefinitely after protests

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- When the entire Internet gets angry, Congress takes notice. Both the House and the Senate on Friday backed away from a pair of controversial anti-piracy bills, tossing them into limbo and throwing doubt on their future viability.

The Senate had been scheduled to hold a proceedural vote next week on whether to take up the Protect IP Act (PIPA) -- a bill that once had widespread, bipartisan support. But on Friday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he was postponing the vote "in light of recent events."

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives said it is putting on hold its version of the bill, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). The House will "postpone consideration of the legislation until there is wider agreement on a solution," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith said in a written statement.
