I have been presented with the opportunity to do an internship with US Airways. Specifically, their flight operations department, including crew scheduling, auditing, and flight training development.

In light of the recent announcement of a loss of $177 million for the past quarter and the continuing financial struggles since 9/11 and before, I would like to know your opinions on what I should do with this offer.

I would like to do this because I think it would be a great experience.

WORST CASE scenario: I do the internship and US Airways doesn't exist in 2 years. Would my experience still help me get a pilot job at a regional airline or major airline 5-15 years down the road? Or even a non-flying position with an airline if I was furloughed, lost my medical, etc.

BEST CASE scenerio: I do the internshiop and US Airways in 10 years is up to the #2 major airline spot in pax/year and making lots of money. Would my experience help me get hired at US Airways, one of their affiliates, or ANY other airline, regional or major?

Thank you; this is a very important decision for me.

Even though your response was funny, this guy is serious. All I can say, is I am not sure he came to the right forum for serious help, we all know the sarcasm that runs amok on these boards. 😉 🙄

Do It. Whatever you do in the future, having some real world experience to put on your resume can only help. The health of the company in 2 years doesnt matter.Plus the contacts you make probably will help you at some point in the future.Even if US goes under, most of those people will be working somewhere.

BRONC,

If you're looking for a pilot position down the road, I would expect flight experience to be worth more than the internship. If you have the choice between a flying job of any kind or the internship, I would personally take the flying job. This is only my personal opinion, however.

If you're looking to "pad" your resume with some experience in the areas you'll be exposed to as an intern, mainly in case that's the type of job you may want down the road, it probably won't hurt and may help. After all, you can say you saw how NOT to do it!!!

I'm not so sure about an internship but I heard they need a test pilot for the ac coming out of Alabama after the "S" checks.

HEY BRONCO ... THERE YOU GO .... "S" CHECK TEST PILOT .... JUST AS GOOD AS RUSSIAN ROULETTE... BUT IT WILL PAY WELL I'M SURE!

get a job as a ramper instead. Its way cooler than sitting in an office all day. hahaha, seriously I would do it, its something u can put on the resume , hopefully future employers will have heard of us air when they either dont exsist either from failure or being taken over. whats your degree in?

Last year I applied for and received an internship offer to work @ US Marketing in CCY. Although I ended up interning for Uncle Sam instead (only because the 5% Iraq War wage cut made the pay too low to live comfortably), I got a very positive impression about the company and its corporate culture. That said, do realize that US is all about the short term, at least for the time being -- barring a radical change in the way the airline does business, it will have no choice but to develop and implement some kind of endgame within the next year or so.

Do it!

I got my first airline job from an internship. I still point to it with pride on my resume. Even if you don't stay in the airline business, employers appreciate experience gained from an internship.
