Is a PPC the same thing as a Type Rating?

Type rating is for specific aircraft--over 12500 lbs or based on high stall and max speed (forget the exact numbers but I believe 80 knots stall or higher and 250 max or higher)

PPC is a check that authorizes you to fly that aircraft for 1 (or 2) years before requiring another ''ride''.

For example, a Dash 8 requires a type rating and also a PPC yearly to operate it. They type is completed once (held forever) and the PPC renews your ability to fly it yearly (over every 2 yrs under some programs).

(3) Individual Type Rating Requirements

(a) Aeroplane - Two Crew

(i) Knowledge

An applicant for an individual aircraft type rating for aeroplanes with a minimum flight crew requirement of at least two pilots shall have completed a program of ground and flight training on the aeroplane type, and

(B) Aeroplane - Two Crew - Restricted to Cruise Relief Pilot Duties Only

An applicant for an individual aircraft type rating for a high performance aeroplane shall have completed ground training on the aeroplane type.

(ii) Experience

An applicant shall have completed flight training and have acquired a minimum of 200 hours pilot flight time on aeroplanes.

(iii) Skill

Within the 12 months preceding the date of application for the rating, an applicant shall have successfully completed a qualifying flight under the supervision of a Transport Canada Inspector or a qualified person qualified in accordance with CAR 425.21(7)(a).

A "type rating" is the term used to describe the fact that you have undergone the necessary training and flight test to fly a specific high performance aircraft. It is placed on your Transport Canada Licence. Once completed, it stays on your licence.

A "PPC" is a company specific term used in commercial/airline operations only. It indicates that your type rating training has been conducted and is current for commercial ops.

ie. A Be20 pilot has a type rating for the aircraft. He is the owner and uses it for pleasure. He would not have a PPC.

ie. A Be20 pilot has a type rating and works for a charter company. His yearly training with the company validates his PPC document which is a non-legal form. The form indicates when his next check is due and is used primarly for his own and the companies reference.

One small thing in the terminology, there is no reference in the CARs regarding aircraft over 12,500 except with respect to performance calculations. The idea of "Twelve Five" having anything to with licensing has been gone for darn near a decade.....since CARs anyway.

Here''s the compressed description for you:

An aircraft may require a Type Rating on a Pilot''s Licence because of only two factors:

1- it needs two pilots because the manufacturer says so, or ....

2- the performance is deemed to be sufficiently high that specialized training is required by Transport Canada.

A Type Rating on a two-pilot certified aircraft may only be issued on the basis of a PPC. IE: B-737, DC-9, etc.

A Type Rating on one of the other single-pilot certified aircraft would be a "High Performance" type with a VMO of 250 Kts or greater OR a stall speed of 80 Kts (?) or greater. IE: Some Beech 200''s, MU-2, Cheyene, etc. An Individual Type Rating may be obtained based on a "Recommending Flight" by someone who also holds the same type rating.

That said, you may also apply to have a "common" aircraft type added to your licence if you pay the fee and submit the forms. IE: Cessna 172, Piper PA-28, etc. This is mostly done by Canadians who are going to a foreign country which requires that each type you fly be endorsed on the licence.
