Someone told me that terminal A in MIA has to be completely redone. Anyone know anything about this? I haven't really been through MIA recently.

IMHO, it is going to need a total re-roof in the very least. The closing of A-Con put the final nail in the coffin for AA at MIA and turned their entire operation into a certified nitemare!

I went there about 3 weeks ago. Everything is boarded off after C...apparently there were serious structural problems in A and it's been pretty much condemmed for the use of aircraft. I think only the upstairs part where the credit union and training classes are can be used from what I was told.

Also hearing the new terminal J has cracks in the cement walls, etc. AA isn't in there, though.

I think the idea behind closing Terminal A was to speed up construction of the North Terminal, thus saving $$$$. With the whole area closed to Pax there is no security issue with construction workers. They have already demolished Terminal B and next will be Terminal C. When finished it will be one long terminal from the East end of what is now Terminal A to the West end of terminal D with a train on top with several stations. I think the only structure issue with Terminal A is that they need to make sure that it can support the new train that will run the entire length of the North Terminal . A lot of rumors about bad construction run rampant in Miami. But from what I can tell they seem to be moving along a little faster than before. Maybe we will see the terminal finished in a few years.

Exactly. Anything else is just BS.

They are installing a train system on the roof of Concourse A. By closing Concourse A, they are shaving anywhere from 8 to 16 months off construction.

Concourse A will see renovations, though, such as new insulation, fixing some areas prone to leaks, etc.

Dade County and AA's handling of the north terminal has got to go down as one of the most embarassing airport construction projects in history.

So they want to reduce construction by 8 to 16 months? Why weren't they so concerned about timelines five years ago? This terminal will have taken more than ten years by the time the Super A is finished. In that same time, the south terminal was finished (only took five years), and AA managed to build an entirely new complex at JFK on top of their existing complex without any serious disruption to flight ops.

Likewise for Terminal C at EWR, Terminal 5 at LHR, T-1 and T-5 at ORD, and Terminal D at DFW. They all went up in less than five years from the time of initial ground breaking.

I was told that the roof wasn't built strong enough to support the train system that was included in the plans all along.

Either way, it's a fiasco.

The roof does need to be re-enforced, but the roof work could have been completed without closing Concourse A, as was the original plan.
