I worked for HP in the early 90's, and I have 13 years with DL, and there are good and bad with both systems. I have to admit, I hate getting to the airport 2 hours before departure-only to be bumped by a senior employee's SPOUSE or CHILD. On the other hand, when it's first come-first served, it makes people check in really early!
Getting bumped by a spouse won't happen with seniority boarding. Here are the stand by codes they implemented for both US and HP.

US/HP
S3/SA3 employee travel and those with the employee
S4/SA4 without the employee/retiree
S5/SA5 without retiree-spouse, dom partner, dependant

You're placed on the list in your boarding code my time of check-in on HP, and employee hire date on US.
