Labor talks at Southwest Airlines hit snag

Word on the street is mediation in DC second week of Jan. Arbitration looming? That's no good for anyone. How much is TWU asking for anyways? What has the company offered?

555 is asking 4% across the board to keep up with cost of living on a 3 year contract

hq is asking 3% across the board for new employees and for tenured employees 3% first year and 1% for duration of contract.

Cost of living is affecting everyone and to alienate the employees that made it what we are today is wrong. I would consider something that is fair and equitable to everyone. What hq has put out leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I won't put much more than this 2 cents in - but where I work, increases of any kind (cost of living, merit, etc) have been put on hold. Even though the cost of living continues to rise, a 3% cost of living increase is 3% more than a lot of other folks are getting these days.

That's as far as I'll stick my nose into your contract issues. Good luck

Wow... bold move to try and tighten up the scale like that, but I like what I see when they move to raise the first year pay. It's hard to get good rampers anywhere, but the name and culture of Southwest alone have done a damn good job bringing in the best so far. Pretty much confirms that it would be the highest paid newhire ramp job in the US, correct?

I agree with you LAS, not a good message to send to the topped out rampers. I would have to guess that the majority of rampers systemwide are topped out already or close to it. Is that the case in Vegas? I know SWA has the best retention, so it only makes sense in my head (which isn't saying much). I've heard from friends that you top out something like 10 years at $25.00. I don't know what other airlines top out at for ramp, or after how long... does it compare well?

Seriously, Iwish you the best in negotiations. I hope all parties can walk away satisfied.
