Labor Unions' Future

The New York Times Magazine (Sunday, January 30) has a very good article on Andy Stern, the head of the S.E.I.U., and how he thinks organized labor must change to meet the global challenge.

Buffenbarger of the IAM is a featured bit player in the article. He comes across as quite the old-school buffoon. His idea for bringing organized labor into the 21st century is to start a labor oriented cable channel! Like ANYONE, even union members, would tune in to "The Labor Channel."

Short on specifics, yes. It's a magazine article, not the plan of action.

Sounds like the "drivel that Mr. Bush spews"? Another way of saying that is: "Fight fire with fire!"

Actually the SEIU put out a essay called "United we win" a while back. The essay laid out a plan of consolidation and reorganization that would result in larger, but more focused unions. For example our industry, the airlines, instead of being split up between unions like the TWU, IAM and IBT, which represent all different types of workers, but none of them very well, would be consolidated into one union that is focused on our industry.

I just wet my pants. That has got to be one of the most ridiculous ideas I have ever heard of. I seriously cant stop laughing.

1. How much will the AFL CIO charge for the cable channel??

2. After comming home from your second job is that when you are supposed to tune in ? ?

That was a good one every time I need a laugh I will have to come back to that statement.

Yes its kind of like Jim Littles claim to the Presidents council that all we needed to do to fix the TWU is to "Communicate, communicate, communicate".

I guess he feels he can talk away our bills and the pains that the concessions caused. Concessions that we took while he gave himself pay raises.
