All over the 'net (airliners.net, WSJ blog, etc.), readers are stating the same thing, over and over again: The D E L T A lettering and widget, especially on the 744, are too small. It almost looks like the airplane is shy about its new owner!

Example: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Delta-Air-L...-451/1449765/M/

Can the powers-that-be do something about this?? Please enlarge and/or boldface the name of our airline. The pic of the 777 when you sign-on to i.crew is larger/bolder....THAT's what they should go for.
There was a succesful campaign during the Mullin years to return the widget back to its original design (rather than the rounded one); can't we do something like that here regarding the lettering?
Thanks for allowing this vent. 🙄

ok, but please, not as big as the BILLBOARD that Pan AM went to!
That was too big!

Ask marketing about "branding".

Ask marketing about "branding".

I understand branding. I understand also that they were going for a simplified, cleaner look, not just for aesthetic reasons but for cost-savings (less days in the paint shop) too. I actually like the paintjob. That's all well and good. But branding is also about standing out from your competitors, catching the eye. The lettering is the opposite of that. In my opinion...and that's all it is..the lettering seems wimpy in correlation to the size of the a/c. That's not standing out; nor is it making an impression that we are now the largest airline crossing six continents. It should connote strength.
It's a very simple fix. Keep the font/typeface, just slightly enlarge and bolden it.
It's not that big of a deal but I've seen slight tweaks done to liveries before.

Luke,
I believe you have a valid point, the name does not look right or in the best position on the 744(it looks worse on the opposite side aircraft R) in an awkward position again.

If they lowered the name and simply positioned the name between door 1 and door 2, it would at least appear more balanced on that aircraft.

I like the overall livery though, its clean and modern.

I think this paint scheme sucks (more so on the widebodies).

I would have liked to have seen the original Widget return.

 Agree , the paint scheme is bland and boring. Delta name is way too small. Actually a redo is necessary. The tail and the body of the a/c ( all of them ) are incongruent. It looks like " oops" we made a mistake, alot like the bad US pain scheme.

Im constantly amazed at what people find to complain about.

When you come out in public wearing something unflattering or maybe you have something hanging out of your nose, aren't you glad that someone cares enough to tell you the truth?
That's not complaining. That's called being a good friend.

Sometimes the Emperor has no clothes.

You can expect your new in-laws to call him out often.

Fact: On top of a crappy livery, these planes will look real dingy, real fast. APU exhaust, glycol, etc. will all really show up fast. Hope DL has a lot more wash crews than NW does...

what I have noticed in this industry and as Luke mentioned, marketing is extremely important. so much in fact, they should absolutely draw upon history and consider every attempt to update their marketing plans..the key here is to properly balance the links from the past..to the links of the present. has this been accomplished? yes...you can still see some elements of prior livery in a modernized way(and I do not think the late 60's 70's livery is coming back) as opposed to the previous two liveries that simply did not make any sense..the widget was changed to a smoother version and part of the identity and being recognized is lost. The former widget was recognized throughout the world and was a corporate ID that should have never been tampered with in the first place(just my opinion) if the product is recognized through a logo, then leave it alone...but its already been done... I like the modernized version(current livery) compared to the previous and the one before that!

A consistent image is easier to market than one that changes time and time again(what was happening over these constant paint/scheme changes I have no idea? why did that happen so often?)

Stick with one an let it be!

The 744 livery is not balanced, it does not look its best potential the way it is presented currently, and it looks worse the more I look at it! (especially when I saw Aircraft R side! I was trying to embrace it..its not working..however the livery does look nicer on other aircraft..) the logo on the 744 tail is too large compared to the obviously smaller widget and font. subtle changes(Luke's comments) would bring this more in balance.

if they do not do anything other than paint the planes, please do this.

Do not change the livery in the middle of painting the current fleet and change it again..or in a couple of years!

I get what your saying, but seriously in the bigger picture of things its not the end of the world. And no matter what paint job, NWA people are going to speak out against it anyways as the aircraft was the flagship of the NWA fleet... not so much for DAL.

Design is always highly subjective, some will like, some will not. I would rather money be used elsewhere then to spruce up a old tired and inefficient aircraft that will most likely meet the boneyard in a few years anyway.
