US adds LGA-PHX

You did notice that it's Saturday-only service, didn't you? The one day of the week that the LGA perimeter rule does not apply? Any airline is free to fly LGA-Anywhere Domestic on Saturdays. Most do not bother except for western ski destinations in the winter (Vail, Aspen, Jackson Hole, etc). Put this one in the BFD category. 😉

while it is true that Sat only service outside the perimeter has usually not been successful, AA is one of several airlines that have offered Sat. service outside the perimeter including to EGE.

If all the airlines that served LGA and wanted the perimeter rule to go away did this, then maybe they could cause a groundswell of support for removing the rule. It makes little sense anymore now that EWR and JFK are already well served as major hubs.

PANYNJ is notorious for ignoring public opinion, but the Governor Cuomo might be able to put pressure to bear on it. Popular pressure means nothing to PANYNJ, as they are 100% appointed bureaucrats. But enough political pressure might just get something done. When customers call and ask "Why only Saturday?" they should be told to contact Albany and complain. But the airlines will never get the opportunity to make that request of their customers until there is at least some inconvenient service to get them on the phone.

I agree! Seriously what right does the Government have to regulate who flies when and where? You think US couldn't fill 3 flights a day LGA-LAX or elsewhere?

Let the market decide. not appointed hacks.

while I agree that the free market should decide what is the most effective use of slots at LGA (and thus its "sister" airport JFK), the LGA perimeter rule has been able to withstand court challenges - so it is unlikely it will go away.
.
It was implemented for a similar reason the perimeter rule was added at DCA - to keep a certain level of flight activity at the further out airports (JFK and IAD). While there is enough demand at both IAD and JFK to ensure those airports would remain viable, if the perimeter rules were abandoned, there would certainly be a significant shift of long-haul flights to LGA and DCA at the expense of smaller airports that are currently served from LGA and DCA but which might not make the cut if those cities had to compete for a slot with larger, more profitable flights.
.
It also factors into why the slot swap makes some sense... if the free market can't use the slots the best way possible (without distance restrictions), then creating enough demand via a larger hub operation by one carrier at each airport will help ensure the airport is as efficiently used as possible.

I firmly believe this is why US is trading LGA slots for DCA, it's just a matter of time before the perimeter is lifted at DCA. Congressmen and Senators are easier to buy off.

While you might be right, I don't think the DCA perimeter will be lifted. Remember the security ninnies (federales like Secret Service and others) who argued in September, 2001 that DCA should be permanently closed because of its proximity to numerous high-value targets? More flights to LAX, SFO, SAN, SEA and others would mean more 757s loaded with more fuel. I realize that doesn't equal more risk to the White House, Capitol Buliding, Pentagon and others, but I expect the same security ninnies to carry the day if someone argues to relax or lift the perimeter rule. Aren't there still very complex vectoring rules for arrivals/departures to DCA, some for noise abatement and some to satisfy the security ninnies?

Way to go slick, better late than never

Why do you have to be so mean to Scoop!

Now, you just go and PM Scoop and give your real identity. And do it right this minute! Scoop doesn't like it when people point out what a buffoon he is, and it just torques him off to no end just to think that there is something (your identity) that he doesn't know!

"Security ninnies." I like that. Colorful, descriptive and apropos.

Hmmm, I've noticed that in almost all of you easties.

Do they teach that to you in indoc along with how to properly trash an aircraft?
