Today Aviation Daily reported US Airways spokesman David Castelveter said the furloughs adjust the pilot work force to a fleet level of 279 aircraft. This was the level the airline indicated it would maintain after its bankruptcy protection filing. Castelveter said that although the pilots’ contract allows US Airways to reduce its fleet further, the carrier hopes to make no additional furloughs in the near future. “We would clearly prefer to stay at a fleet size of 279,â€￾ he said. One factor that could alter this would be a U.S. declaration of war with Iraq, which would probably increase fuel prices and further weaken demand. “The potential of war with Iraq certainly would cause us to reassess the situation.â€￾
