Major Ind Expansion

I'm very curious to see how this all plays out. I work for the "Big Red Machine," and this is the first any of us have heard about it. I guess they're going after one LCC at a time. Who's next?

I don't think the IND market will support very high yields to any of these cities. It's one of the reasons SWA isn't doing a lot there. Expect to see NWA end up dropping some of this new service down the road, or putting it on smaller equipment.

Interesting announcement coming the day after ATA announed a major expansion of IND flights.

Appears to be taking on both ATA and U.

From 3rd Quarter 2003 data, US Airways was the largest passenger carrier from IND to Philadelphia (66% share), Washington (75%), Boston (68%), Hartford (36%), and Raleigh (32%).

ATA seems to be having problems right now...so it does'nt hurt for NWA to toss some flights in the IND market just in case. If it puts a little more pressure on ATA, all the better.

It seems to me that this is a low-risk venture, but high reward...

If NWA's service doesn't work, it represents probably two NWA jets (1 319 and 1 DC9) to be reallocated, and a handful of RJ's.

But, if US Airways and/or ATA fail, NWA will be in a prime position to take the traffic and be #1 at IND...

This seems to be a trend for NW, somewhat mentioned in the press release... When Midwest was on the bubble, NWA stepped up and increased its offerings from MKE...

It seems to me, that NWA is setting itself up for the potential failure of other carriers (three of them now), particularly in the old "North Central" region. I wonder if we will see them more of this? I would think yes, we will see more, I am not sure where...

Where in that region is left?

It would appear to be a two front attack by NWA. It is straight at ATA, but an indirect shot at US. NWA may be thinking that since SWA is taking it right at US in PHL, they could use some help. Remember that US is the largest carrier of East Coast north-south traffic. If US is not around, all the other airlines prosper. Just my thoughts....

I think that's exactly what NWA is doing; they smell "blood in the water" at ATA." Of all the LCC's, ATA is doing the worst (though NWA's 2Q results weren't rosy, either).

NWA is just helping ATA make their decision about going back to a charter airline with a small presence in MDW and IND, if any. Just my thoughts.....

The new Air France/KLM group knocked us down a notch. I believe there was some shifting in the world's top 8.
