I was just using that as an example. Although, I would have to say that 2% of the federal budget is definitely a huge chunk of change, arguably enough to perhaps rebuild the city of New Orleans. But eliminating the program is not the answer, it must be a combination of things.... change the tax code completely, and use either a flat tax or a consumption tax, and cut fat from the programs. Prescription drugs, health care, welfare, etc... somethings gotta give. Don't make the bread winners be the only ones to take the hit.

So where does the money come from then? Pork? I bet there are a lot of bread winners have something to say about that. The middle class dont have any juice left, and the poor are, well poor. You can change the tax code all you want, but you still need X amount of dollars. what does it matter how you collect it? And dont get pissy about the size of the budget, Its your guys spending it. The wealthy in the country have enjoyed exponential growth in thier wealth over the past 10 years, while everybody else has stood still or gone backwards. Its time for some sacrifice by the most well off in this country.
Spoken like a true socialist... yes, why don't we penalize the upper eschelon of income earners, simply because that's what they are. Have them foot the entire bill and we'll leave everyone else alone. I suppose that you'd also like this sacrifice only to benefit those who are impoverished, right? After all, a large percentage of the displaced people from N.O. were at or below the poverty line... so much for Thomas Jefferson and his self-evident truths.....

Exactly.... that's why, at the beginning of this thread, I suggested rolling back the tax cuts, and having federal tax increases across the board. Couple that with funds from the programs, and we can rebuild the Gulf coast without borrowing. The key word here is "everyone".
Are you suggesting you are Newt Gingrich? Because I'd be surprised if you got your rant about "its time for some sacrifice by the most well off in this country" from something he said. Anyway, Robin Hood, the "roaring 90's" are over, and it's going to take more than just increased taxes to pay for this. You're avoiding the issue of collective responsibility.
