May the 4th Be With You

Signs posted around the US Airways system today say “May the Fourth Be With You†and show a space-age scene reminiscent of the movie Star Wars. The signs commemorate an important day one year ago: On May 4, 2004, US Airways joined the Star Alliance.

The Star Alliance is the world’s largest airline alliance, combining 16 carriers and serving 795 airports in 139 countries. The alliance, which continues to grow, expanded to 16 members when Portuguese airline TAP joined in March.

Members also include Lufthansa and United, two of the world’s largest carriers, as well as three smaller carriers in Europe that are “regional members.â€

Star has given US Airways access to tens of thousands of international travelers, who have gained a new awareness of our airline. It has also opened hundreds of new destinations to US Airways passengers.

It provides advantages for everyone from Chairman’s Preferred members, who can enjoy many of their travel benefits on alliance carriers, to leisure travelers who can now use their frequent flier miles to travel throughout the world.

The alliance and related code-share agreements with United, Lufthansa and others, have generated traffic for US Airways. For example, from January through April 2004, revenue from passengers flying interline routes with our non code-share European partners rose by 69 percent year over year. But from May through December, after US Airways joined Star, it rose by 103 percent year over year.

“Star has benefited our passengers immensely, giving them convenient access to destinations around the world,†said Dennis Tierney, director of alliances.

“It clearly has reaffirmed our status as one of the world’s major airlines, making our name and our service familiar to tens of thousands of travelers. Today, a year into our membership, we continue to learn from the alliance and to grow along with it.â€

More money wasted.

I think STAR has been a great thing for US but why the heck did the company go out and waste money on these stupid posters....this is even worse than the money spent on the Clear Skies Ahead crap.

I have an idea, lets take the $$$ wasted on this nonsense and either 1) give it back to the employees or 2) give our interiors a good cleaning/repair or 3) bring our FC service to at least a passable level with glassware and hot meals on transons...I'd be ok with us actually spending a little bit of cash if it was on something useful...
