Michelle Obama’s grand tour of southern Africa earlier this year cost American taxpayers nearly half a million dollars – and that's just for the flights. This follows in the wake of claims this August from sources inside the White House itself that the First Lady may have spent “$10 million of taxpayers’ money on vacations alone in the past year.” Without all the figures available, it is impossible to establish the total cost to the public purse of Michelle Obama’s 42 days of holiday during that period, which included her trip to Spain last year.

Not sure how the links I posted indicated blame of any kind. I posted the Bush link to show that first ladies make official trips abroad on the tax payer dime. If you disagree with the idea its self Thats fine. You seemed to be implying that Ms Obama has dine something that other first ladies had not. If you want to try a red herring argument go ahead and knock your self out.

Have you found a cost break down for the trip that Ms Bush took to Africa? I have looked but was unable to locate one. I could not find that costs for any of Clinton's, B Bush or Ms Carter either. I'm not quite sure why they are all of a sudden so interested in Ms Obama's trips. Political perhaps? I assumed that since you have stated tat they are wasteful and lavish that you have a basis on which to make that comparison against the other first ladies but you have posted no supporting evidence to support your claim. Not surprising.

As for the link you provided regarding her staff perhaps one of these days you will actually verify something that you post. Had you verified it you would have been equally distraught over the size of Laura Bush's staff since they were the same size. You need to actually do your own thinking instead of letting others do it for you.

The issue isn't how she compares to what other first ladies did during their husbands' administration.

It's the whole leadership by example thing. Lavish and wasteful spending seems a bit contradictory when Obama's busy preaching "shared sacrifice" to the rest of the nation (the one she wasn't really proud of?). It's living the same lifestyle as those pesky rich corporate jet owning fat cat CEO's who are entirely out of touch with mainstreet.

Seems pretty obvious to me that Mrs. Obama isn't very interested in eating the same dog food her husband's administration is foisting on the middle class and below.

It's also obvious she can afford to be paying more than her fair share.

It is exactly a comparison. First ladies make official state visits and have staffs. Why I do not know. They are not elected. They are not appointed. As far as I am concerned they should have no staff unless they want to pay for it them selves. Ms. Obama is behaving no differently than any other first lady has. That is the point that your CA free press failed to mention. The Free press article made it seem like her staff level was unique when in reality it is not.

The fact that they are out of touch with the average American is nothing new. Ms Roosevelt and Ms Carter are the only ones I can think of who had/have any grasp of what the average American life is like.

It's perfectly legit to compare the trips she has taken or her staff size to previous first ladies.

Before you get on your horse and start talking about Obama and shared sacrifice let remind you what was going on during GWB administration. US servicemen were getting killed in Iraq at an alarming rate, the families of National Guard and Reserve servicemen were under severe financail strain. Never mind the fear of hearing a car pull up in their driveway. How many trips off the tax payer dime did GWB's family take while this was going on? See, two can play this silly little game.
