If Unions are great they have nothing to worry about, people will still stay in the union. But I think in Wisconsin half the Teachers droped out of the Union so maybe they didn't market themselves very well.
There is a real opportunity here for unions to modernize, market themselves professional instead of like goons and provide a service workers will want and most importantly value enough to pay for it. My guess is they will not do any of that and just racket up chants and threats as the jobs dwindle away.

How many unionized jobs have gone across the pond since the 50's?

it is not just pricing. It is also environmental, health and safety. If we didnt focus on these things when unions were strong, the US would be be a bigger sh- hole than China is today. We breath clean air, have clean water, sanitary sewer systems, and safe work environments. Men like my SEIU union father put three kids through college and today his grandkids are medical doctors, scientists, and teachers. Cant do that in countries these jobs went to.
I believe unions failed to adapt. But they made a lasting impression in todays business and for that i am forever grateful.

Mout here know I have little love for unions. Worked with one for over 7 years and that was 8 to much in my opinion. Having said that I have to wonder who or what will keep the companies in check when they are gone. We already have countless of examples of companies screwing over their workers. We also have countless examples of unions screwing over their employers. I do not know if federal work rules are the answer but it is obvious that post companies do not have their employees best interests at heart. Given the current employment environment there is even less incentive due to the fact there are 10, 20 or more people for most jobs out there. Its a buyers market.
Unions seemed to haveout sight of their purpose which in mg opinion was to me a safe work place for people and have a fair salary. They now seem to only care about getting as much money as can be extorted out of the company and getting as much dues as they can. Why should an unskilled FA or person on a UAW assembly line get paid as much as they do? That is not a fair wage in my opinion.
Unions are on their way out. I don't know that what is left in their absence will be better.

Wasn't that your prediction about what the DUMBs were going to do in Wisconsin? Walker's still there, and so are most of the others who faced recall.
You seem to think that the DUMBs really care about unions, Bears. Even at the local level, it's not the third-rail that it would have been 30 years ago.
Political suicide? That's essentially what a lot of union leaders have done, but it's been a slow bleed out. They've increasingly spent more time worrying about politics than actually representing workers.
Workers noticed. They couldn't vote with their wallets before. Now they can, and they have.

MS Tree, the market place is what will look out for the workers, a thriving competitive free market place where we are all free to chose where to work and at what wage is what protects us not artificial things like unions or government. They obviously make things worse, people really have to stop looking for some magical savior.
Exactly. You have to wonder when the people serving coffee on-board on an airplane are paid more than some of the engineers who designed the plane, something is wrong and that is not the marketplace at work. Right to work is fair, it doesn't bar people from joining a union nor does it directly weaken or challenge unions, it simply removes union membership as a condition of employment and requires the union to prove it is worthwhile to the workers rather than receive automatic support. Unions are on their way out, young people are uninterested in joining unions when they see how destructive they have become. Hopefully we will one day see a national right to work law to level the playing field for all states and end the injustices of compulsory union membership.

Organized labor/the labor movement/unions are only trying to maintain what they have and maintain the members/dues payers they impose their presence. There may be isolated gains that are few and far between for unions like the SEIU or AFSCME but largely the trend is downward. Who would have though even 10 years ago that in Michigan, arguably the biggest stronghold for private sector union membership would be a right to work state? Unionists can kick and scream all they want, the reforms are here and there are only more to come.

How naive does one have to be to believe that wages will stay steady-or increase- w/o a meaningful counterbalance? if corporations will do so solely out of the goodness of their hearts, then what's been stopping them/ Real wages have been flat for decades.
I disagree. I'd say some of the most engaged labor activists/active proponents for reform are in the 22-40ish range...
