I have it . It works for me . It's convenient . Yes the company should be paying for all this yadda, yadda. But it's USAirways we are talking about . If you don't like the pricing plan or having to pay for it ... Don't get it . As simple as that .
Probably worth it for reserves so they can see what crises are brewing and where they are in "the bucket."
I just got back from int trip and saw the question. No i am only a fa and interested if it was worth it or not. I wish I was part of it.For those who don't want to take the time to figure out how to do it for free via a terminal program on their iPhone, yeah it makes sense to just pay the monthly fee. But I'ld first make Phasemane answer wether or not he has a fiduciary interest in the service.![]()
It should not be too hard to set up a computer to do what they do. The more I think of it, the money they charge is really a rip-off. Go for it.I just got back from int trip and saw the question. No i am only a fa and interested if it was worth it or not. I wish I was part of it.
If you have the Flica net app on your computer desktop at home already, then all you need to do is leave your computer on at home and use an iPhone app that remotes in and controls your desktop over the internet (several are available). It takes a little tech work to set the software up but I watched/helped a pilot set it up for free and prove it works in less than 30 minutes. As long as your computer at home is turned on then you have control into CATCREW (as well as all your other apps too). The service in the OP has the benefit of being easier to set up and has someone babysitting the server. It should not be too hard to set up a computer to do what they do. You do not even need the display being on. You can share the screen or whatever the Mac/Windows equivalent is. Slight and mostly unnoticeable delay. Software already built-in in most cases. Something any local nine year old can help you with, personal experience. <sigh>If you have the Flica net app on your computer desktop at home already, then all you need to do is leave your computer on at home and use an iPhone app that remotes in and controls your desktop over the internet (several are available). There are probably more way than not to accomplish thru the internet someway to geton catcrew. It seems that this is pretty simple way to do it without having my computer on at home and all that entails. For me the monthly charge is ok, anymore and I would have tosay forget it. But the covienence of it on my phone without any hokas-pokas is worth the 0.1663333... cents a day to have it at my fingertips. So far it has worked flawlessly. For all the $ I blow on useless _____, this seems to return some value. You do not even need the display being on. You can share the screen or whatever the Mac/Windows equivalent is. I totally agree...guys will set up old computers, rig up that hokas-pokas system that has to stay on all the time to save five bucks a month and at the same time get off the airplane, walk up to Starbucks and plunk out four bucks for a coffee with no problem. Oh well...some things will never change. I'd rather have that convience at my finger tips also phaseman, I to can afford the one and a half cents a day. One and a half less coffees a month or one less cold ones at the bar and it's covered!!
I'm no whiz but I thought the set up was extremely easy. You just need to download the VPN application for your smartphone, enter the address, code and set up like you did under tools for CatCrew at home. When all set up, you want to hold your finger on the screen for a few seconds to pop up the sizer and keyboard on the bottom of the screen. Press on the plus sign twice for optimal viewing, and press the keyboard for typing. You can also press on the tabs for 'enter' and the other screen functions. While I think it's pricey for the total price of FliCa at $9.95 plus whichever mobile catcrew option, it's still worth the convenience of being able to connect with just a phone line since internet is not always available like when I'm in the car/bus/metro/ riding.Maybe it's just hype, but the outfit offering this is saying within the signup process that, due to overwhelming response, it may take up to 24 hours to get the download instructions once an order is placed.
I guess I will just skip that Starbucks one or two days every month.
Update: "Instructions" came through in about 5 minutes. They're pretty poor instructions, leaving much to the imagination. For airline crews, being "procedures-oriented" people, the instructions are confusing and incomplete. What is perfectly obvious to a computer geek is not obvious to the average user. They need to do a little better job in return for their $5 month.
To expand on the Starbucks analogy.... 10 people standing waiting for their various types of coffee. The barista turns from the work space and places a tray with ten cups of various coffees on the delivery counter....then walks away. That's the type of instructions this place provides. Until they get it together, you're on your own. If your an iPhone/Droid whiz (or you have a 9 year old at home,) you're all set.
