I think that you will be hard pressed to find any AA employees that had a deep love for Crandall.

I certainly don't love the man,but I DO respect the man for what he has accomplished.

I also give him respect because he was the only member of our management corps that would come down to the ready room unannounced, sit in the smoking room,light one up and actually talk with the people doing the work.We'd drop F bombs on him and he'd shoot them right back at us.


I'd rather have a Crandall or a Bethune at the helm than some of these Nancy Boy CEO's.

He kissed NOBODYS A$$, and would'nt think twice about Marching up onto Capital Hill, and telling a lot of thise MORONS to "pound sand" !!!!!!

I actually feel that the current CEO at AA is a sharp guy. I saw that special series that ran a few weeks ago, called a week inside of American Airlines. Arpey appeared to be well in control of the Airline, and I admire him for not running to BK court as many others did. He didn't dump anyones pension, and seems to realize the importance of his employees. Some may think that Crandall was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I'm not one of them. Herb at SWA and Bethune over at CO were much more admirable to me as CEO's. Crandall always seemed to think that his airline was the only one in the country by the way he spoke. Not that he shouldn't have stuck up for AA or anything, but he went way beyond that most of the time. To him thousands of lost jobs at other airlines were a joyful event.

And airline employees would be better off if USAirways would have gone away before they set the LOWEST PAY scales in the industry :down: FIRST at running airlines pay and benefits into the damn dumpster

If US hadn't taken wages to the basement, someone else would have done it instead. You can thank the BK court and their process for that. They gave the company anything they wanted, while some upper management people were getting millions is bonusus at the same time. W&G along with the top legal guy at US took something to the tune of $20 million in payouts days before US filed for BK. Somehow the judge was willing to overlook this item. I place most of the blame on the system.

The fare war was the Pan Am 99 dollar any where fare. Every other carrier matched and then beat it with other incentives

There's a lot of truth there, NHBB. If you've got to deal with a SOB, better to deal with that SOB when you're on the same team.

He would have been more than happy to see every other airline out of business, and their employees out of work as well. As I said above, he played some very dirty pool against BN to finish them off as fast as possible. Not that BN wasn't in trouble beforehand, but his tricks made certain that they wouldn't survive. I have listend to all of his Hitler style speeches over the years, and this guy had no reguard for anyone other than himself. You can be a good effective CEO without being like him...

Really? The opinion on aviation issues from the guy that built the world's largest airline (which BTW is the only major airline that has been able to avoid BK), is worthless? He knows nothing worth sharing about how to run an airline?

I couldn't agree more. What he WAS and what he IS are two different things. I'm sure we can dig up a few more former airline CEO's that can give their meaningless opinions about the industry today as well. Crandall ran AA in much different times than what we have today. Long before 9/11, long before record high fuel costs, and long before the BK trend hit the industry. I'm willing to bet that he would have filed and screwed the hell out of his employees in a second if he were still in charge. He always struck me as someone who should have been one of those who had his own ministry show on TV...... 🙄
And he wasn't as brilliant as some think. What about the failure of the RDU hub that was intended to kill both ATL and CLT in one strike? Lucky he was able to find a sucker in Midway Airlines to take that mess off his hands. 😱
