This morning's St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that AA and SWA have signed new 5 1/2 year leases at St. Louis Lambert Field. Incentives are included in the leases for increasing flying at STL.

Could this be called the "Southwest Effect." Funny how this happens right after the tentative relaxing of Missouri in the Wright Amendment.

This has been in the works for at least six months, and has nothing to do with Bond's amendment to the spending bill. Don't believe me? Go do a news search from about three months ago, which is when we announced that we were giving back the D gates which had been vacant since the de-hubbing two years ago...

Has nothing to do with it. Not everything has a bogeyman hiding behind the bush.

As a matter of fact BOTH AA and SW were unhappy with the costs at STL. They provide about 80% of the daily flights between them. Because Lambert is set up as a cost neutral airport by the city, any costs not covered by concessions, parking fees, etc. have to be made up by the tenants. They started that new $1billion (?) runway and improvements before 9/11. Now the per passenger costs for AA and SW are pretty high.

Part of the agreement allowed AA to return all of Concourse D to the airport authority which gives them more flexibility in offering a whole concourse or significant number of contiguous gates to a potential tenant.
