A US Aircraft gets the IFE for testing installed in October.
It is a West Airbus (I think I heard AC 680?).

Sounds like this company is cutting edge.
It is an all fiber system, weighs in at 30% less than current IFEs. Huge bandwidth and little electronics make it a very adaptable and upgradeable system.

Is it a Pay per view system? My guess is YES. Haven't checked the links yet.

I like this quote from the Airfax article:

"Did we mention that the seat units have a credit card reader built in?"

I wonder if Lumexis can program the credit card reader to deduct money in $2 increments!

Yes, it will be a flat rate fee, using a CC to activate. System will be installed on one aircraft as an evaluation.

it says the FAs have the ability to comp a seat, a row or an entire section of the Airplane.

The thing I noticed is they have power ports too.

Once it is in service I'll make a point of flying it and report back.

They said this system is upgradable. My only worry about the system is that the Fiber Optic Cable being wired in the seat. They better have that cable hidden and well insulated as to they are fragile. I believe this is a turn for the good in the passengers favor. I hope they are maintained and kept up well.

Um. not to sound like a downer... But the Lumexis website looks like it was built by a high school student. If the quality of their website is indicative of the quality of their product - they look like a perfect fit for the high cost of cheap airline.

Oh, I wonder what you will report. 🙄

There is one reason they got this system....C H E A P...that is exactly how Luminex promotes itself.

“FTTS is open-architecture,â€￾ says Cline. “There’s nothing to lock the airline into the current GUI and content set. If they want, their own IT staff will be able to make the changes. We will however offer this as a service to smaller carriers, and we expect to be very competitively priced.â€￾

This one quote scares me for some reason.......

I can see it now with the vaunted US Airways IT dept.

Upcoming enhancements to IFE:
Ability to change channels: 1Q2010
Ability to change colume: awaiting cost estimate

I can also foresee the FAQ that will be asked:
Customers are comlaining when they wans to sleep they cannot tuern off the PTV screen. All it does is hows ads when passengers do not use them?

Our enhanced scrrensaver not only informs passengers about exciting new programs such as our BOB discount for expired items but it also generates revenue.

One example is Hefty, who advertises ther new line of flexi bags baggage which many USAirways passengers have been using of late. Allowing passenger to turn off the PTV will shut off this revenue source which we have contracted to advertisers.

Yeah, I know a dude who works there. There is a reason US is the launch customer, something about a "sucker born every minute". Their website, built by the owner's teenager. Reading it, I would think the content is by his off-spring, also.

We are certainly seeing the "value" of cheap.

IF this system comes out and is a success, you guys will STILL think of something to biittch about. Funny, there were a lot of people laughing at a small coffee shop a long time ago in SEA. Now look. Give a new company a chance to prove themselves. I'm glad we didn't have you guys around when the weird contraption called the Apple Computer came about. Imagine then a home computer. People literally laughed! Now those Apple inventors and nerds are laughing at YOU!!

The people who started Lumexis have alot of experience with IFE systems. My money is on them. Of course there will be bugs with the system, as there are with any new system. That's why US is doing a test run. Hey....at least they're testing it before committing to it!
