Also your point is if the fiber optic is to be used as the backbone, then the systems on either end of it can be upgraded relatively easy. The one thing that would concern me if I were in on the decision is the durability of the cabling. Fibre-Optic is VERY fragile and the only thing worse than no IFE is broken IFE in your seat back.
I am certainly not an expert on burying cable nor laying it on the ocean bottom, but, it seems to me concerns about durability are taking into account passengers kicking and shoving feet and suitcases into confined areas under the seats in from of them, several times per day, likely testing the maximum acute bending angle in real life, something not likely underground nor at the seabed, though, YMMV.fiber optic lines are running underground and under the sea connecting europe asia and africa to the internet.
fiber optic cable shouldn't be a problem for using it with the new IFE (and possible in-flight internet service? crosses fingers)
