Nuclear Power

Some boring (nuclear physicist) dude on CNN said they are trying to piss on a bonfire. (well, not exactly a quote)

Time will tell.

Lot of arm chair physicists these days. Doing nothing is not an option. Here you have a country with relatively few natural resources to use for power generation, relying on a large import quota to meet energy needs. Nuclear generation is a relatively safe method, but Japan, living in some of the most seismic active areas in the Pacific needs nukegen as a result of a severe lack of other alternatives for power without importing them now finds themselves in this circumstance.
Curious, wonder what level of quake expectation was factored into the design of Japans nuke gen sites.
Wonder too, what level , say LA has factored into building design.

They say there are two plants having partial meltdowns now.

So are you saying there are only two possibilities? Fossil or Nuclear? You cannot think of any other alternatives that should be developed?

These are the main sources we have today. Wind farms, thermal, solar, etc... have their uses but are not dominate in mass energy production.
Remember I'm in Kalifornia and we have it all...

😀

I know they are not dominant. Neither is nuclear. There is a lot of money to be made in nuclear energy. Not as much woth alternatives. And go figure, the cheaper alternative ade not a popular.

Nuclear officials believe a hydrogen explosion may have occurred at Japan’s Fukushima Dai-ich nuclear plant crippled by massive earthquake

It isn't looking good from many aspects.
Already there has been one H explosion and we could see more.
Much like the FEMA protocol here in the USA, Japan is already in the limited info mode.

Just read on Google News, they spotted another Tsunami heading towards Northern Japan.

This just in:

Japanese officials say the nuclear fuel rods appear to be melting inside all three of the most troubled reactors

I cannot recall this level of destruction in Japan since WWII. This strikes me like one of those computer scenarios where the controller put in every bad thing they can to see your reactions but would 'never' happen in real life. I do not even want to imagine what the death toll will be when all is said and done.

The news just reported another explosion at the nuclear plant

The news just reported another explosion at the nuclear plant

From what I learned tonight, its vented steam from the containment vessel which has hydrogen in it and it explodes, screwing up the containment building which supposedly is the last line of defense.............but as long as the containment vessel holds together, other than venting, even in a meltdown, the fuel should be contained.
