ATLANTA -- CBS 46 News has learned that a source close to the merger talks between Northwest and Delta airlines said Thursday that both airlines have walked away from negotiations.

The key sticking point, according to the source, is disagreement between the airlines' pilots over seniority. The source said both pilots unions wanted their members to retain their current seniority in the new airline.

Both sides originally said the seniority issue was only a minor sticking point. But the source said it is clear now that the issue could end merger talks for good.

The merger would have created the world's largest airline

There will be a merger, forced or not.

In a forced merger, no payraises, no equity, no improved work rules, NADA.

NWA should rethink the offer. Get over keeping your same senority. DAL pilots won't get to keep their same senioirty either.

hope they dont screw up like us and hp has done good luck either way dl and nw

Actually, this is not what the link says at all. Perhaps it's been updated, but now it says Northwest pilots are still looking for a way to solve the problem. So as of today, the answer would be "no"...the merger mania is not over especially with oil at $100/barrell and the economy going into a recession.

Depends on what news article you read and where it originated.

Atlanta = Pilots walk away from merger.
Minnesota = Pilots take a week off from merger talks.

Looks like the people of Atlanta hope they walk away and the people in Minnesota hope they come back in a week.

As usual you can't believe anything you read.

"NW should rethink the offer" ?????????

NW stands to lose MORE than DL, plus the "little tid-bit" that BIG RED.......Does NOT NEED this deal !

Now the "good ol' boys" in HOT-LANTA,.......well, thats a different story.

With EVER rising fuel prices, DL will "fold" their Tent, long before NW !!!!!

(Probably has something to do with all that $$$$$$ NW is making, flying very full 747-400's,................Long, long distances) !

NWA doesn't need DAL, and probably can make it fine alone. Anyone remember now the employees at PANAM got treated by the likes of the BIG WIDGET????????

Let's see, $100 oil and one hundred -9's, who will fold first? NWA just lost their biggest cargo contract, DHL, which is over 40% of their cargo income, right? Again, that is bad for DAL how? Let's see, what is the difference in fuel used on a 747 vs a 777 and what is the cargo and pax difference? Guess that's why no one is buying 747's, huh? And let's not forget all those happy employee groups who get along so famously. Yeah things are looking great over there, so I'm all for giving up my widebody left seat to an old geezer at NWA and I'll gladly throw gear on a raggedy ass airbus for years. Don't know why we aren't in favor of giving NWA the top 1500 seats while we take the bottom 3000. That's so more than fair, where do we sign up? Then when the 747's and -9's get parked we can hit the bricks instead of those guys because they are older after all and bring so much to the party.

Luckily for all involved this exercise just seems to have filled the square of pleasing the DAL board by trying to do a deal so that we can get passed it and go on with our lives. It was always clear that the NWA pilots would over reach hoping to fall back on arbitration to split the positions. What they didn't count on was the fact the deal really wasn't very important and DAL was serious about walking away if the SLI wasn't fair. NWA hasn't settled anything without arbitration in hundreds of years so it was a safe bet they would not start now. Problem solved, carry on. Go on back to fighting with eachother. That hasn't changed since we used NWA for practice interviews back in '88 and likely never will. Only one guy in our unit ever went there and he left as soon as Fed Ex called. All of us had the same impression and reason for staying away: the pilot ranks are dysfunctional and it appears just as true today, which is pretty sad.

Hey.."Newbie",

Last time I looked, DL was flying a SH!T load of tail mounted 2-holers !

Lets see, ALL the legacys quit flying Cargo, EXCEPT BIG RED(not to worry, NW will get another contract in place of DHL)

How much (money making) cargo is DL flying on their "3" Asian flights a day, while NW hauls MILLIONS of pounds of Air freight daily over the Pacific ?

Now let me get this straight "Newbie",
When it comes to doing their "ASIAN HOMEWORK", DL has'nt done SH!T, but THEY expect BIG RED, to give up their (quirky  ) Culture, wind down the MSP market(a Place EVEN WN wont DARE to enter), drop their Name, Paint those 47-400 beautys DL colors(NOT), fly those 787's that are coming off the line VERY soon, from SEA to "ATL", instead of MSP  ?

Lets see.."Newbie" , did I leave anything out ?

One thing is for sure, once DL realizes that they CAN'T go it alone(I think they know it already, why else try to pull a fast one, on NW), ...UAL won't be changing THEIR name anyday soon,. CO has "3" better offers BEFORE DL, but NOT all is lost,...................Doug Parker want's to DEAL, plus he'll dump the name, then you guys can be KING..........................................in "PHL"

Oh well !

Ignore this clueless tool. It just joined recently to stir the pot. (Like there aren't enough pot stirrers here already) He even managed to post 99% of the BS found in rumors and worthless media "leaks." Try the DAL threads, they might be willing to bite. :spam:

Once again, FACTS please to back up all of your assertions. WHO are CO's 3 better offers from? WHY can't DL go it alone and NW can?
FACTS, NH...ever hear of them??

You summed that steaming pile of a company called NWA pretty well. It was a good company until the late 90's then it went downhill fast. I truly feel sorry for anyone that is trapped in that hell hole with loads of seniority. I was only there 16 years...now a scab is my replacement.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

CO's..3 better offers ???

That's an EASY one............................AA/UA/NW !!

Why can't DL go it alone ?...............................A S I A - A S I A - A S I A !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOBODY gives a SH!T if DL fly's "5" or "7" times a day from ATL to BIRMINGHAM AL

DL is #3, because they carry more pax. than NW,.................BUT.........(speaking of FACTS).........DO NOT "THINK" (for DL).....that,....THAT Includes GLOBAL REACH !!!!!!!!!!

Again(since you want FACTS).........WHY was Anderson brought in(the way he was), if DL didn't need to get a deal from STEENLAND.

I think DL's # 3 "ranking" has got you CONFUSED...Luke.

Assuming we call LCC a LEGACY carrier(and THATS a stretch), then there are 6 carriers.

3 Do NOT NEED to DEAL(though you'd never know it looking at Tilton/Steenland)

The other 3 NEED to deal. The ONLY difference IS, that CO and LCC are smart/honest enough to know/say it.

SEE luke, those "ratings" I mentioned are deceiving !

NW is "ranked" # 5, (only ahead of # 6/WN, and 7/LCC)

But when it comes to STANDING ALONE,..............the sequence goes...1/AA...2/UA....5/NW !

But, you know what Luke.............YOU like who you like, and thats OK !!
If Anderson "TELLS" YOU, that the Moon is made of GREEN CHEESE, and you want to BELIEVE him,....well....thats OK too !!!
