Nwa Launches $50. Biz Fare Increase

If the airlines adopted a fuel surcharge for pax (just like they have for cargo -- forty cents per kg!) the boys/girls from the north could remain fat and happy.

But they won't.

You're getting mighty testy there, N by NW. TIme for a swig and your Prozac.

OBTW - the statistics on NW's profitability (lossability) come right from documents NW files with the DOT. That's US DOT - the federal government, you know.

2008 is 3 years from now. We're now in 2005. Let's start w/ the basics.

World Wannabe...Your "Song" is tired , off "key" for awhile now. Time for a new tune. Didn't you reference "quarterly reports". You have become notorious for "creating" "facts". My mental state is just fine. I suggest you seek medical attention for your delusions.

Seems to be quite a bit of denial coming from the NW side of the crowd. I guess the good folks in MSP aren't quite so shielded? Welcome to reality folks. Isn't is grand?

Denial...something you must know quite a bit about (greed is what drove Delta to dam near extiction). Shielded from what? We played the reality card and did better than Dal, so you tell me WHO is in denial. We have faced this demon before...perhaps that is why we were better prepared. Don't you worry about us. Reality is grand...glad you got a taste of it. We are battle hardened and no doubt will be around for the next down turn. Will Delta?

WT
A cap indeed makes sense as part of the wholesale restructuring that DL initiated. Not only does the cap keep the maximum fare from growing to levels that INVITE LCCs, it also keeps consumers and businesses believing that fares are reasonable and they no longer have to rely on travel agents and negotiated fares to find the best deals.

I would really like to know what Delta Airlines knows about keeping LCC competition out of their hubs. Hey, WT, ever hear of AirTran, or Jetblue? You guys did a nice job with both of those. Especially Airtran as they have set up shop to stay in ATL. It's a sea of 717's in Dixieland.

After Delta discontinues the Simpli Stupid fares, it will be interesting to see what you think of pricing caps.

I think it's precisely because DL wasn't aggressive enough that AirTran was able to set up shop after their unplanned visit to the Everglades. If DL had played hardball then, AirTran wouldn't be here today. Maybe DL was just too kind to the poor suckers that had just lost a plane and had to shut the company down but I don't think they'll do it again.

I think you can pretty well count on Simplifares being here for the very long haul. The cap may be raised but there will be one. Whether NW or anyone else chooses to observe it is completely up to them - and they should do what makes the most sense for their business.

.... How quickly the employees of NW forget what happened not so very long ago. The summer strike, the bailout from MN and KLM.

Actually, I'd bet the other way; most employees of NW remain skeptical of mgmt. 's entreaties for concessions because they can't forget the promises still unfulfilled from the last time around ('93).

Hmm, blue KLM uniform, dutch name on tag, native Dutch speaker etc, etc. As for how she would know, well, I sure she got the pleasure of dealing with those who had flown on NWA.

Maybe this was a flight attendant you spoke with?

Unless something's changed in the *very* recent past, NW agents work KL at JFK.

What color is the sky in your world? Must be a shade of rosy red and bowling shoe gray.
It has long been suggested that NW was impervious to the LCC's due to their route structure. While that may be somewhat true, they don't appear to be weathering the employee cost structure too well. Isn't it a bit ironic that it was NW management that asked the NMB to be released from negotiations? A bit of a role reversal.
NW managment is desperate to get their costs under control and the NMB kindly closed the door in there collective face. Your problem NbyNw is that you have lost all objectivity. You view any negative NW financial tidbit to be some kind of personal attack. Is NW losing money? Yep. Guess what, so is every other frickin legacy. I don't believe most here are tyring to proclaim that NW is going to disappear, but if you don't think there is an absolute real possibility that NW will end up in BK, then yes sir, you are in denial.

Probably a really low fly by over BK Land coming for NW but hopefully that's all

I must say the analyst on here continue to speak "my" mind for me...continue to put words in "my"mouth.

It is a very REAL possilbility that NW could end up in BK (pressure of low fares[SSFs]/BK of 2 major competiors/ High fuel/ pension issues/ labor costs superior to it's cometitors. Of course we have to do something.

All is not rosy at NW, nor has it EVER been. However, we've met our challenges irregardless of how. We will do it again. The pudding in the pie is how an entity meets it challenges.

This industry just loved commenting on NW "ol' planes...well, look how that played out 4 years down the road since 9/11. NW has NEVER followed industry "trends"... NW has historically been focused on making money. It has been a wise strategy...better than what even we could have hoped for.

There are some serious challenges ahead, but I have no doubt that they will be met...fortunately, or un-fortunately we have fought this battle before. Off to Rome, no fighting on here (till I get back)

Have a safe weekend all!
